| Hi all,
I'm researching my Smith links, my lot moved from the Silsden, Yorkshire area into Nelson.
I'm looking into William Smith bC1841 Sutton, West Riding he married Betty Simpson b 1844 Kildwick, West Riding...they had children Susanna 1866, Mary 1869, Isabella 1871, Sarah 1873, Annie 1875, Maggie 1877, Grace 1879, Tom 1882 & fanny 1885.
I'd love to find a living relative on this side as I've done pretty well in getting them on the rest of my tree.
I look forward to interacting with you folks and sharing ideas.
Cheers Mark (Aka Benners)

| Hi Mark I have just joined the Smith Forum and I think your lot of Smiths and mine are the same gang. My great grand mother was Grace Elizabeth Smith b. 1880 in Silsden, her parents were William Smith and Elizabeth Simpson - hope this is of interest.

| Hi Mark
I hope we have got a connection - my great grandmother was Grace Elizabeth Smith who was born in Silsden. She was from what I can gather one of nine - Susanah b.1867, Mary Laycock b. 1869, Isabella, Sarah Ann, Maggie, Anne, Grace Elizabeth b.1880, Tom and Fanny b.1886. ( At the moment ancestry site appears to have problems so I cannot recall all dates of birth!) Grace Elizabeth's parents were a William Smith and Elizabeth Simpson. In 1901 Elizabeth a widow (known as Betty on census) was living in Nelson with Mary, Isabella, Grace Elizabeth and Fanny. In early 1901 from what I have found Maggie died aged 23, Tom left home and was living in Nelson as a boarder with another family and Grace got married ! Grace married Arthur Proctor b.1882 in Burnley and they had my grandfather John Arthur in Sept 1901. This has been quite difficult to find out as my grandfather was someone who I never met and his father Arthur was brought up by his grandmother and various other family members. I have found some information about the other sisters - Susannah married Harry Fisher Donaldson who was born in Richmond Yorkshire he worked for his father John Donaldson b. in Belfast who was a master nail maker employing several men. The Donaldson's also moved to Nelson. Annie as you know married into the Rothwell family, Isabella I think died aged about 42 - but what happened to Tom or Fanny I do not know. Sarah Ann I think married into the Stuttard family, Mary L was still single in 1911 living with Isabella in Nelson - but I need to do more on this - hope this all links in with your findings. Anne |
