PostSubject: Smiths of Silkstone/Penistone/Barnsley (100-MAR)   Sat 19 Jul 2008 - 23:36

HI
I'm new to the list and its nice to see so many people searching for Smiths. I have been searching my Smiths for 40 years with several visits to the UK. I can't believe from all these Smiths that I can't find a connection. Everyone knows when searching for Smiths there are MILLIONS.

I have traced back to a George SMITH who had a son Henry. Henry (on his wedding certificate) states his parents are George Smith and Jane Steele. First evidence of Henry is living with his Grandparents in the 41 census and thereafter. I thought his parents must have died.

I had a George SMITH who lived out here in the same town as Henry (who emigrated 1863) who my father said was 'some sort of relation'.
THIS George states on a certificate that he married Ellen Taylor in Barnsley 16th June, 1856 in Barnsley (she was from Gawber) however numerous searches by various kind people have not been able to find this marriage. (they emigrated between 1856-58) She was 12 years younger so it could be his second wife.

Any clues on where to find out more? I'm 95% sure it is him but won't add him to tree till positive.

wave Hello maree,

How's it going with your search for more clues to confirm you have the correct George Smith? Sorry to see this is the first response you've had on this Topic. I know you said you'd been unable to find the marriage of George to Ellen Taylor, so I checked too, on the scans of the original GRO marriages Indexes, and it does appear that there are none indexed for a George Smith nor an Ellen Taylor in the Barnsley Registration District for either June nor September Quarter 1856. That doesn't mean it didn't happen though of course, as some entries have been proved to be missing from the GRO indexes. But.......

If the marriage definitely took place in Barnsley, it should have been registered and indexed at the Barnsley Registry Office. Local Registry Offices have always kept their own indexes, quite separate from the GRO. So if it did occur, Barnsley Reg office should be able to trace it in their own registers. You might already know this - but if not...........

You can search Barnsley's Birth Marriage & Deaths Indexes online at their website. This is an ongoing project and possibly not all dates for the various registers are yet included in the database. But in any case, you could contact them with the details you hold.
You should find contact details at their site..........
http://applications.barnsley.gov.uk/service/registrars/

Other than that, you have the 1841 and 1851 Census data for Henry living with his grandparents, but I was wondering if you have any 1851 Census at all for Barnsley area for any George Smiths of around correct age group?

Good Luck maree and please keep us informed, we're interested. good stuff!!

Carole
