PostSubject: Joseph and Elsie Smith of Ossett England   Mon 9 Jun 2008 - 17:31

I am a great great grandson of Joseph and Elsie Smith of Ossett England. They were born in 1840.
My great grand father was joseph Smith who married Mary Chappel in Ossett England and immigrated to the US in 1889 to Philadelphia PA.
I have no prior history and wondered if someone had more information on the roots.
Thank You

Hi John & Maxine,

yes, and Martin's (hollysmudger) Ossett Interests Summary was
recently recompiled at new page >> Smith List page 25 >>

John,
Have you got the Marriage Certificate for Joseph Smith and Mary Chappel?
If not - that might be a good place to start, then work backwards to their births & then to their parents' marriages, etc. The following appears to be the GRO Indexes entry for the Marriage..........

January to March Quarter 1888
Dewsbury Registration District : GRO Index ref 9b 824
SMITH Joseph
CHAPPELL Mary

A copy certificate, if you still need one, can be ordered from the local Registry Office or online from the General Register Office.

The present-day Local Office is.............
The Register Office, Wellington Street, Dewsbury, WF13 1LY.
E-mail: dewsbury.registrars@kirklees.gov.uk

Have you started any Census searches yet for the family, from 1881 and working backwards? If not - first try the 1881 Census Transcriptions Database provided for free by LDS Church at >> Familysearch.org >>

Some useful historical info and links at....
Genuki page >> Ancient Parish of DEWSBURY >>

Also explore our own Smith Project >> Links Cabinet >>
for a wealth of links to more Online Databases & other sites that you should find useful.

Please keep us informed John. And if you need any help at all
- please give us another shout Very Happy

Carole

PS: John, You're now in the Forums' >> Red Usergroup>>
(for those researching Smiths of Lancs, WRY & IoM)
& your Username should now display in Red Great Stuff!!

Hi John,

Hope the above information was of some interest to you.

Thanks for your message off-board enquiring about editing Profiles. This prompted me to post a new Topic on the Announcements Board, as I realised there was nothing already on there with details about updating Profiles. So I hope that will be useful for you and other members.........
Here is the link to it.........
