| Hello tessob and Welcome to Smith Chat. Thanks for telling us about your Smith interests, also for your nice message in our guestbook. And I confirm that I've received your interests via the online form too, for inclusion in the Smith List of Lancs. WRY & Isle of Man, & I'll contact you eventually with your Project Member ID. And as requested, you've now been included in the Forums' Smith Project Usergroup (the red group). Back to the important part - your Smiths!!
I'm thinking that the 1861 & 1871 Census information you mention must be from the Sheffield Census - for township of Attercliffe. Just have a couple of queries. Was Samuel's wife Elizabeth Jessop also from Scotland or from the Attercliffe/Sheffield area? I'm also assuming that their children were all born in that area too, but please correct if I'm wrong. I notice that you have put "Blackburn" in brackets after mentioning the marriage of your grandparents John Jessop Smith and Sarah Ann Holden. Is this meaning that they were married in Blackburn East Lancashire (my own home town), and that they lived there until Sarah and the children emigrated? And if so, is it possible that John Jessop Smith died in Blackburn? Maxine is the moderator for the West Riding Board, and we'll both try to help if at all we can. Hopefully other members who are researching their families of the same area will call into your topic here too in the near future. Look for forward to chatting again. | Hi Carole I have a enquiry, in the census information I got about Sarah Ann Holden, she was born in Blackburn Lancashire about 1862. On her marriage certificate it gives her birthplace as Preston Lancashire. Also her youngest child Samuel was supposedly gone back to Sheffield. I am not sure if it was before WW2 or after, he had a wife and couple of children |

| Hi everyone, Here is some info. John Jessop Smith died about September 1901. His daughter Ellen born 1890 died 1891. John sister Mary married Joseph Coldwell ( Couldwell) September 1873. They had a son James 1874. Mary died 1874 most likely from child birth. Joseph died about 1889. James lived with his grandparents Samuel and Elizabeth Smith 1881. |

| Thanks for sharing that information with us. It may well be useful to someone else. Isn't it sad how many women died in chidbirth and how many babies died? I suppose they were all open to infection because of their poor diets and style of life. Some things are better these days aren't they?
