| hello - my great grandmother was an ellen smith born 1864 in Worsborough nr Barnsley Yorks. Altogether I have now uncovered 40 Smiths in my family tree on genes ru. The latest I can find is Lonnie Smith born 1905 in Birdwell Yorks but no trace in 1911 under that name - his parent Edwin Smith was still around. The furthest back I can get (though it is difficult to confim without further research) is possibly John Smith (he had a brewery my auntie used to say!) b. 1757 in Darfield Barnsley - though I can't say for sure. Any links with members welcome. regards. |

| Hello Lilac and it is good to hear from you! You seem to have quite a bit of information so let us hope that it will 'ring a bell' with someone out there. It is quiet on the forums at the moment, partly because it is holiday time, but more people will be around in a little while. Good luck with your research, Gillian ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ''What will survive of us is love.''Philip Larkin

| Hi Lilac, I have an Ellen Smith too, but according to the 1881 and 1891 census, she was born about 1868 in Northowram, WRY to Alfred Smith and Hannah ( Unknown ) and she had siblings Edna b. 1869, Emily Ann b. 1871, Clara b. 1873 and Alice Hannah b. 1875. Alfred was a younger brother of my gt. grandmother Hannah. He was born 5/12/1837 in Beggarington, Halifax. Any chance that we have a connection. Best wishes, Janice |

| Â Hi Lilac, Thanks for replying and sorry that there doesn't appear to be a direct connection with your Smith family. I do have a John Smith in the family tree. He was the eldest brother of my gt. grandmother Hannah Smith and was born 5/7/1832 in Ambler Thorn, WRY to parents James Smith and Susannah Rusby and had siblings Hannah ( gt. grandmother ) b. 1834, Martha b. 1836, Alfred b. 1838 and Betty b. 1841. I don't know who he may have married, but he was last seen on the 1851 census with his mother Susannah, step father Joseph Haggis, siblings as above plus a half brother Richard Haggis living at 12 Great Square, Beggarington, Northowram where his occupation was wool counter. His father was James Smith b. 1811-12 Northowram d. possibly 1845. I also have the surname Noble in my tree. but don't suppose there is a connnection there ? Hannah Noble b. 1820 Queenshead d. 1883 Leeds, Oulton married an ancestor William Holdsworth ( 1824 - 1884 ) in the Harrison Rd; Chapel Halifax in 1846. As far as I know, they didn't have any children. Hannah Noble's parents were Jonas Noble b. 1792 d. 1864 Leeds and Mary Woodhead b. 1790 d. 1861 Leeds. If you make any other connection with those names, do get in touch again and happy hunting. Cheers Janice |

| Hi Janice,
I see you posted information about James Smith and Susannah Rusby, Beggarington, Northowram. And that Susannah subsequently married Joseph Haggis and they had a son Richard.
I am interested in identifying this Joseph Haggis, and particularly to know whether he was a son of James Haggas and Grace Horsfall m Halifax 1805. Their son Joseph was born 02 May 1812 and christened 06 Sep 1812 at Amblerthorn. There are so many variations on the spelling of the surname, (Haggas, Haggis, Hagges, Hages) I am getting confused!! and thought I'd ask someone who must have been over this ground before. The age from the 1851 census is about right but not exact.
If I've got the right Joseph, then I can tie him as a brother to the Hannah Haggas b 1810 who married Joseph Jagger 16 Apr 1827. By 1851 Joseph Jagger was a farmer and stone merchant living at 15 Great Square, Northowram, very close to your Joseph Haggis and Susannah. And that would finally let me identify Hannah's parents as James and Grace!!
Any help in the confusion is most welcome. Thanks in advance - Maggie |
