Summary of Interests/Message
I've traced my Smith Ancestry back to c1780
in Royton and a lead could mean that they
actually came from the Broughton/Gargrave
area of Yorkshire West Riding.

Joseph Smith married Martha Swire in 1775
at Broughton in Craven

Joseph has now become my Keystone
individual, prior to this it was his son Hezekiah.

Joseph and Martha had 3 children baptised
at Broughton in Craven:
Ann, Joseph & Hezekiah.

The family then moved to Gargrave and
another 6 children came along,
Martha, Dinah, Mary, Thomas,
John & Elizabeth.

Joseph was recorded as being a husbandman
at the baptism of one of his children.

Joseph died 1797 & was interred back at
Broughton. The family then moved to Kildwick
where Martha died in 1806, again interred
back at Broughton.

The boys of the family all appear to have been
Cloggers. John & Hezekiah were in Royton,
Oldham by 1841, Thomas & Joseph in Honley.
Very little is known about the girls.

All the boys married apart from Joseph(Jnr)
who died in a Turkish Bath at the age of 80.

Some speculative info:
Joseph Smith (Snr) was possibly baptised
29/1/1743 at All Saints,Broughton,
father Joseph.

If so, siblings would include the following
baptised at Broughton:
1738 30/4 GEORGE
1739 23/12 THOMAS
1741 20/12 JOHN
1743 29/1 JOSEPH
1746 30/3 WILLIAM
1747 25/6 HARRY
1750 5/8 JAMES
1753 29/7 ROBERT
1755 28/3 MARY
