An Exhibition at the Dunkenhalgh, Clayton le Moors,
to celebrate Lancashire Day and Local Foods and Crafts


Some info about Clayton and the Dunkenhalgh..........

"........... CLAYTON literally means a settlement built on the foundations of clay. At one time the settlement was known as Clayton Super Moras, meaning a stretch of barren land. Either name is accurate.

Until the Industrial Revolution, the Clayton area had a number of impressive old buildings, including the Dunkenhalgh, Clayton Hall and Sparth House.

Between Clayton and Rishton is the Dunkenhalgh, which was the former
residence of Judge Walmesley and later the equally influential Petre family..

The Dunkenhalgh Hotel, Clayton-le-Moors, near Accrington,
in the 21st Century.

"....Every Christmas Eve, a ghost is supposed to appear at the Dunkenhalgh in the form of a young lady dressed in a winding sheet. It appears that in years gone by, Lucette, a French governess to the Petre family who lived there, fell in love with a young officer. He wooed her and gained her affections, riding away after accomplishing her ruin promising to return. He never did and Lucette, not daring to go back to France, could often be found wandering through the glades. One stormy night she took her life by throwing herself off the bridge in the rushing torrents below......."
