Thank you, for the welcome to the Smith family.
I live in Goodwood, a suburb of Adelaide, the capital of South Australia. Some of my forebears came here from Givendale Grange in the Parish of Ripon in the West Riding of Yorkshire. They arrived here in August 1839. Others came in 1856.
Several of our families lived at either Givendale Grange, Great Givendale or Little Givendale on the Newby Hall estate. They were tenant farmers and it appears that various generations farmed there for over 100 years. Some others of our family farmed at Humberton-cum-Milby in the Parish of Kirby on the Moor (Kirby Hill).
The earliest records I have show Smiths in the area from c.1700. Various family members lived at times in a number of places including those already mentioned and Westwick, Nunwick, Boroughbridge, Sharow, Hutton Moor, Skelton, Blois Hall, Hutton Conyers, Knaresborough, Ripon, Copt Hewick and Kirby Hill.
Christian names in the family include Jacob, Richard, Robert, Thomas, James, Henry and Joseph for the males and for the ladies, Ruth, Mary, Elizabeth, Jane, Lydia, Charlotte and Eleanor. In many cases, the first son was Jacob and the first daughter was Mary. An interesting point, a number of Jacobs married a Mary.
This information gives a bit of a lead for anyone who thinks we may be related. I would some members write to me and say that we are.
