I'm looking for a catholic Ann Smith, born in Clayton le Moors 1800/01 from census entries. There are 4 possibles, late 1790s and the most likely is daughter of James and Ann, but I can't trace James and Ann back to the Returns of Papists 1767 Smiths of Clayton, John and Jennet and large family, at the moment. Their descendant James is married to Ellen. Some of the Ribchester Catholics seem to move over to Clayton and their family in the 1767 list has different names, Bernard, Jeremiah and Cicily. Ann Smith's daughter, Elizabeth Clough, married John Broadley and their family includes a Cicily. It seems an unusual name, unless anyone knows different. Marie 87

wave Hello marie87,

Thank you for sharing your Smith interests. Yes I agree that Cicily quite a distinctive name & so seems possible that your Ann Smith (b c1800) family could have been of the Ribchester origin.

Hope I've understood this correctly -
you're thinking that James of Clayton (descendant of John & Jennet)
& his wife Ellen, are one possibility for parents of Ann,
& another possibility as you mentioned are - James & Ann (from a
baptism you've found but whom you can't trace in the Papists List)?

Couple of queries marie - Did you get the Dunkenhalgh Chapel/St Marys Enfield baptism records from the IGI Batch P-006751(1756-1837) &/or original register?
& is it the IGI entry for the Anna Smith baptism 11th August 1799 that you're considering (shown as child of Jacobus & Anna),

Oops got a couple more questions!! :ck-smile: are there any more Smiths on the 1841 Census shown as born Clayton le Moors or Ribchester, & whose names & years of births would fit in for being possible siblings of Ann? Just a thought (but yep I know - Smiths!! :ck-hrrmm: bet there are lots of possibles!!)

& have you got a marriage record for Ann?

Hope someone else can try & help too. :wave2:

I have bought (hooray for Bob Dobson) my own copy of the Dunkenhalgh/St Mary's, Enfield and Ribchester baptisms, so my refs are from there, not the IGI. I know that Ann is not the daughter of James and Ellen, the latter buried 1816, aged 39, because they had ten children between 1796 and 1814, including one in 1800 and one in 1802. However, I am pretty certain from the godparents' names that this James is the son, bap 17 mar 1777, of Thomas Smith and Jennet Giles, who had 15 children between 1766 and 1785 and Thomas and Jennet are on the 1767 papist returns, he being plodweaver, son of John Smith and his wife Jennet. So who is the other James? The Ann I'm considering is the bap 11 aug 1799, but there is also Ann, dau Richard and Alice, bap 9 aug 1797,(Richard son of Thomas and Jennet again) Ann, dau William and Mary nee Consiglio bap 2 dec 1798 (another son of Thomas). I have tried the census, but really couldn't tell. I did find a William Smith in Great Harwood with an unmarried daughter Ann, which fits the William and Mary family but they might be the wrong ones as the names are not uncommon. There is no James on the returns of papists for Clayton, Ribchester or Samlesbury, but not everyone is named. Marie87

Very Happy Hi Marie87,

Thanks very much for posting this extra information. I'm "watching" this Topic & will keep calling back here to see if anything can come up with for you. Hopefully more researchers of Smiths of Clayton area will also get here eventually too.

I see that Maxine has already acknowledged your other topic which includes Smith data from the >>Dunkenhalgh estate records>> you explored at the Record Office..... thank you..... hopefully that data will also help other researchers in the future.

About Bob Dobson's resources - yes, hooray for him!! I recently received his new catalogue. You reminded me that I must put some info on our Lancashire boards about the resources available for purchase from him.
.... Going slightly more off topic now (sort of!).... Snip
bye for now wave

Thanks Marie - your online form received with the entry for Smith List,
& you're now in the "Red Usergroup"!! :ck-smile: Smith Project Lan-WRY-IoM

We'll talk again soon
