I have been searching for the births of both Peter Smith born late 1700's and his wife Susannah nee Smith. On Familysearch.org I have found them both with their children .. I had already got the names and dates so they match up.

Peter Smith born Tottington about 1786 ofm
Susannah Smith born Tottington about 1790 ofm

Has anyone any idea of what ofm means

Maybe ( Other family member ) I really dont know Mattycat

Oh I had not thought of that! .. this is my two Smiths sides .. lol
Peter Smith married Susannah Smith ...
there are so many of them out there ..well

I have been to this point with them before, listed under their names were all the dates of birth and baptisms of their children .. so I know it's them as I had all that information from a book at the Library on Tottington St. Annes Baptisms.

Plus the fact one daughter Richmall died tragically in a snow storm over the moors where they lived .. my Dad used to tell the story of his Great Great Aunt & I have the information about her in another book ... so I am on the correct Smiths..... but it's finding the two sets of Smith 3 x Great Grandparents.
Thanks Chellin

Thats an unusual name Richmall Mattycat isnt it ??? What an awful way to die poor thing, how did you find out that information ??

Chellin,

Yes it is but I have seen it spelt in her case as Richmael .. which I think is the correct famil;y spelling or Richmall as on the familysearch.org.

Do you remember "Just William"? wasn't that written by Richmal Crompton? and years ago our then neighbour was called Richmael .. she would be about 100 now!
mattycat

ps with a surname like Smith .. you have to have something unusual!

pps Just William is the first book of children's short stories about the young school boy William Brown, written by Richmal Crompton, and published in 1922.

I think it is lovely.

I have some weird names with my Smiths, Traincett, Tranett, Majenta, Lementamia to name but a few lol

Chellin

Like I said ... with a name like Smith! .. but they are certainly different lol

I have read a book in the reference library on St. Annes Tottington by A Glady's ??? can't remember her name now but she had transcribed a lot of th Baptisms for ST. Anne and I did get a lot of information from it .. but nothing for Peter & Susannah's Baptisms (all their children are there) but it's the SMITHS THAT KEEP ME GOING! Not to mention the Hunt family from Darwen .. Nathaniel & father James Hunt ! so many of them and they are related huh!

Hi mattycat,
........ Have you found Peter or Susannah on the 1851 or later Census, & if so - does it give Tottington or Bury for their birth-places? If you haven't got them on the Census - is it possible they moved from somewhere else to Bury area, I'm wondering?

Carole,
I have them on the 1841 & 1851 Census's.

1841 Tottington Lower End.
Alden (this is over Holcombe Moors)

Peter Smith 50 Farmer born in this county?..yes
Susannah wife 55 .. .. ..
Alice dau 25 weaver ..
Edward son 20 weaver ..
Thomas .. 15 wollen miller ..
Charles .. 11 ..
Peter .. 6 ..

They were hand loom weavers and I have the births & baptisms
of the children all with address in Tottington Lower End.

1851 Census Tottington Higher End
Middle Dover
(I think this should be Middle Doe .. I have a book called Holcombe Long Ago
written by the Rev Henry Dowsett ... their daughters tragic death mentioned)

Peter Smith head m 62 Farmer 10 acres born Bury Lancs
Susannah Smith 64 Bury
Thomas .. 26 fulling miller Bury
Charles .. 24 Cott weaver Bury

I have all their childrens births and baptisms from a book at the library on trancribed records by Gladys Coope .. the addresses are all in the Tottington Lower end area (Holcombe Brook) so the parents Peter & Susannah must also have been born in Tottington lower/Higher end.

I haven't found either Peter or Susannah after 1851.

thanks for that mattycat.
Are there or were there any other smaller churches/chapels around
Tottington or Holcombe Moor - where they might have been baptised then, I'm thinking. If they were both from Farming families - maybe both families used a little country chapel for Christenings, somewhere out in the sticks? Just a thought.

Meryl, you already have St Annes of course - but it may as well stay on this list. You probably know about all the others as well - but otherwise -might just be something here worth looking at?

Churches founded pre-1800 & located
up to about 2 miles radius of Tottington Lower End

Tottington Lr End: Dundee Presbyterian, founded before 1699.

Hi mattycat!! Please could you let me have your new email address so I can update it on the web-page? Someone else interested in the Smiths of Tottington has emailed me to say he/she is having difficulty contacting you.
Thanks - and hope you had a lovely Christmas!! santa
Carole

yes - problem solved!! now confirmed.....
mattycat's (Meryl's) email address has not changed - must have been a temporary glitch at the time. Info passed on by email to Ian Schofield, the interested person, and vice versa to Meryl.
