| Good News!! The 1911 Census was launched today by findmypast.com and the National Archives. I've already found some of my HUGHES and SMITHs households!! Because of the additional information given on the 1911 Census returns, I have just discovered that, besides her 3 children we knew about, my great-grandma Hughes gave birth to 2 other children that we didn't know about. This is the information included......... Total children born alive = 5 Children still living = 3 Children who have died = 2 notes from findmypast.com's latest Press Release.... | Quote: | Tuesday 13th January 2009
1911 CENSUS GOES ONLINE * Online access to the records of 36 million people in 1911 * Major new family history resource
36 million people were recorded in the census taken on the night of Sunday, 2 April, 1911. Today, after nearly 100 years, these census records are available to the public at www.1911census.co.uk.
The census covered England, Wales, the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands, as well as recording those aboard Royal Naval and Merchant vessels at sea and in foreign ports and, for the first time in a British census, full details of British Army personnel and their families in military establishments overseas. It is the most detailed census since UK records began and the first for which the original census schedules have been preserved - complete with our ancestors' own handwriting - providing a fascinating insight into British society nearly a century ago.
From today over 27 million people's census entries - 80 per cent of the English records - will be available. A further nine million records of people from the remaining counties of England, Wales, the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands, as well as the naval and overseas military records, will be made available over the coming months.
www.1911census.co.uk is easy to access and enables the public to view high quality colour images of their ancestors' original handwritten census returns. Transcribed text versions of the records ensure they are fully searchable by name or address.
Public demand for the 1911 census, which will be a key resource for family historians, has resulted in the records being released earlier than the scheduled 2012 date. To make this early online release to the public possible, the 1911 census team worked around the clock for two years - scanning on average one census page per second. In line with data protection legislation, certain sensitive information relating to infirmity and to children of women prisoners will be held back until 2012.........
.............. Handwritten records completed by all householders in England and Wales on Sunday, 2 April 1911, the census records show the name, age, place of birth, marital status and occupation of every resident in every home, as well as their relationship to the head of the household.
People will also have unique access to their ancestors' handwriting as the original householders' schedules were preserved and used as working documents rather than copying the details in to summary books as was the case in previous census years.................
'Fertility Census' The 1911 census was the first to ask questions relating to fertility in marriage. Married women were asked to state how long they had been married and how many children had been born from that marriage. The census also provides a fascinating snapshot of the population of the country just a few years before a whole generation of young men perished in the Great War of 1914-1918............
* Pay as you go to view each record. You will be charged 10 credits per transcript and 30 credits for each original household page. Visitors to the website can buy 60 credits for £6.95. * Findmypast.com vouchers will also be valid on 1911census.co.uk. Vouchers can be purchased from The National Archives bookshop and redeemed on findmypast.com. Credits can then be spent on both findmypast.com and 1911census.co.uk. * For more information about using the 1911 census for family history research, 'Census: The Expert Guide' by Peter Christian and David Annal is available from The National Archives online bookshop at www.nationalarchives.gov.uk |

| Hi Jean and Gillian, Oh no that's a pity, Jean!! I was so excited about Lancashire being on there, I hadn't given enough consideration to what counties are still missing - but now I realise that it includes in the Press Release........... | Quote: | ............ over 27 million people's census entries - 80 per cent of the English records ----- available.....

Isle of Man not on yet either!! But at least we know they are on their way. Will try and keep an up-to-date record on this Topic as and when new counties are added.

| Hi Maxine, Yes it would work out very expensive if you wanted to get a lot at once. The images of the original census returns work out about £3-plus each for one household (30 units). Just for the household transcript is about £1.20 (10 units). But the more units you buy in one go - it works out a bit cheaper. I just got the transcripts for some of mine yet - to go back to at a later date to get the original docs of them all. The transcripts do not include everything that is included on the original documents, such as - number of rooms in dwelling, how many children born alive, died, etc. The place of birth does not show up in the Index - so best to include the place of birth in your search criteria, if you know it. The index - search results just give name, age and Census County district and county. So you need to be sure you got the correct person - or you might end up paying £3 plus for an image that is not your family (especially likely to happen if its Smiths!!) On the plus side though - every transcript and image that you pay for and download is automatically saved in a private area of your own - called "savebox"? or something? So you can go back to any of those again at any time by logging into the site without having to pay again (useful if any time you lose stuff from your PC). Carole |

| I've been exploring on the 1911 Census site and discovered that - on the Search page - http://www.1911census.co.uk/search/tnaform.aspxin the Field for "Residential Place" under "Location" you can put in there an address, instead of just a town. Which is good for collecting names - for example - from institutions. eg: for curiosity - I did this......... Surname Field = SMITH Location = Lancashire Residential Place = Blackburn Orphanage Wilpshire I then got these results!!......... BLACKBURN ORPHANAGE WILPSHIRE Each separate entry below, in the relevant columns, also includes... Schedule type - Institution District - Blackburn County - Lancashire Last names / First names / Sex / Birth year / Age in 1911 SMITH JAMES O / M / 1902 / 9 SMITH MARGARET E F / 1902 / 9 SMITH WILLIAM M / 1903 / 8 Tried same for ......... Blackburn Union Workhouse, Preston Workhouse, Preston Prison, Lancaster Prison, Lancaster Workhouse. and yes!! got results! Could prove useful if you know that your relatives were at a certain address in 1901 and might still be there in 1911! My Whittakers extended family all lived on the same street in several houses - through late 19th and early 20th Century - so I'm now about to search for all WHITTAKERs on Meadow Lane Blackburn!! Will see what happens! Carole |

| I have copied this here to the census thread, chobson. I hope thats its some use to people.| 15 July 2009, chobson wrote: | Hi Everyone
Just a note that may be helpful about the 1911 census records.
If you want to see more members of a family to be sure you have got the right one, or you just don't want to pay! Try searching like this:
Go to: "Search the Records" to get the form on screen. Just type in the surname of the family at the top of the form (not first name or year of birth).
Type in the place they were living (if you know)
At the bottom of the form type in the name of the person you are looking for on the census (surname and first name).
The results will not show the person you named (at the bottom of the form) but will show all the other people living with that person who have the same surname. If the surname is fairly unusual or if there are not many people in the town with that name you may be lucky and just get the family you want. If you get lots of names, look for all the ones in the place you are looking for, or look at their year of birth.
Hope this is useful. |
