This church has stood on this site on the banks of the Tillingbourne stream in the heart of the village of Shere in Surrey for hundreds of years.
The pilgrims used to pass by as it is close to Pilgrims Way - an ancient path from Winchester to Canterbury Cathedral.
The Doomsday record shows that there was a church here in the Saxon days but there are no visible remains of that building.
The present church dates from the 12th century and took its original form in 1190.
Shere History
In 750 was the first suggestion of a church at Shere
In 1087 Shere Church was mentioned in the Doomsday book.
In 1190 The Church was constructed in its present form.
In 1243 Land in Shere was sold to the Abbot of Netley.
In 1258 Battle of Shere
In 1275 First extensions to the Church

This information was taken from a booklet I got from the church.
