| Hi Jean, Thank you so very much - I am soooo excited :X2: I have upgraded my kit to National Geographic, have received the results. Now I can trace the migration of my ancestors 31,000 to 79,000 years ago. It is just stunning, amazing, staggering and mind bogling what they can do with a DNA sample Well, I trust that you will enjoy a lovely day/evening and once again thank you. From SA, Karin. |

| :wave2: Gillian, I must confess that I am trying to dissipline myself in doing things that needs to be done. It is very true - I am finding it hard to pull myself away form the :(Comp1): computer. Well, I am very happy that I have decided to make use of a DNA test. I have found the following in my inbox on my return from town - you might want to look at it. http://www.isogg.org/ydnachart.htm This one is free but you will have to wait about a year before youre results will be on their web. We don't receive any results, this is the LDS project. http://www.smgf.org. "I hear and I forget; I see and I remember; I do and I understand."
Thank you for all your kindness, Have a lovely day, From a : South Africa Karin. |

| Thanks Karin, I have had a look at both these sites but I shall have to find out more before I decide what to do. It is all very interesting but I struggle to understand the finer points!! I expect a lot of people do. However, knowing how useful it has been to you makes me give it serious thought. We are having a lovely day here. It is hot although overcast from time to time. | Hi Carole, Gillian, Jean, Daz and list, I have been in Johannesburg for a few days and were are leaving for Cape Town on Thursday. We will be away for two weeks. Serfie my husband needs to see the Oncologist in the Cape. He has a melanomma in his eye and the only unit in SA to treat cancer of the eye are in Cape Town. Daz, may I ask you a favour :curtsey: please? I am putting a little booklet together on my grandfather for the family and I would like to know if I may use two of your poems? The one on "My family are like stars" and "When I am gone" If you don't mind may I please alter the Northen Star to Southern Star or the Southern Cross? I will acknowledge the change if I may use it. Well guys, until next time please keep well, Enjoy the rest of this beautiful Sunday, Karin. |

| Hi Karin What a pity that you have such health problems to concern your family. Let us hope that your visit to Cape Town is successful and please give your husband our very best wishes. He is in our thoughts. I believe Daz is out of the country for a week or two so he may not reply for a short while unfortunately. With all good wishes for a happy outcome, Gillian :: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ''What will survive of us is love.''Philip Larkin

| Hi everyone, Karin has recently been having difficulty logging into Smith Chat from South Africa. We look forward to seeing her back here again soon, but in the meantime, here's an update that Karin sent to me by email. | Karin wrote: | Just to up-date you - THE MAN IN THE ORPHANAGE IN SCOTLAND 1901 CENSUS RETURN ARE NOT MY GRANDFATHER.
According to Ancestry.com Fred Smith was born 1886 in Gibraltar (but the year of birth are incorrect information on Ancestry) I have received the info from the Orphanage, Fred was born ca 1885, his father was Edwin and his mother Catherine. Fred only left the Orphanage in 1905 he had no brothers but three sisters.
I am now at a place of total contentment regarding my grandfather - I have really done what I could to find him.
Robert Smith 11/12 DNA now living in the US did not return to me. Hopefully a 25/25 DNA match will come forth soon - I have total peace but still would love to know where Frederick was born.
I will be in touch, Have a lovely day, Blessings from SA, Karin. |
Blessings to you too Karin, from the UK. We look forward to seeing you back in here soon, and we hope that you and your husband Serfie are both well.

| Dear Carole / Karin,
Robert Smith, born 1819 in Newton-by-the-Sea, died in Lisbon, is my great-grandfather. I have LOTS of info about what the Smiths were doing in Portugal in the mid-1800s. Daniel died there aged 15. Thomas is my granny's father. There was also a sister, Mary Ann. AND A WHOLE LOT MORE. When Granny's father (Thomas Henry Smith) died in Oporto, his wife came to Gibraltar with 5 children. Granny was 4. When she grew up she married my grandfather PRIOR, and we have lived in Gibraltar ever since.
I think you have a couple of mistakes though..... I hope you have the right Robert Smith.....!!!
I'm happy to share stuff (including photos taken in the 1800s) if we DO have connections.... Please reply, and perhaps we can set up private email exchanges.
Sincerely,
Dorothy E Prior GIBRALTAR |

| "Newton-by-the-Sea" no longer exists! It was washed away by the sea (!) in the late 1940s. The nearest ..... 'hamlet' is now a place called Sea Houses, near Bamborough Head.
If your Robert Smith is mine - I have lots of first hand and direct information, and a photo of his wife Isabella (spelt in a variety of ways on official records, family Bible, etc.), and certainly photos of their family - my grandmother being the youngest grand-daughter of Robert Smith, born 1819 in Newton-by-the-Sea and died in Lisbon in 1876, acc. to family Bible.
I am writing my family history, and have the whole story, mostly told to me by Granny when I was growing up (I'm now 70). Also - all the corroborating evidence of 25 years of research, in UK, Portugal and Gibraltar.
Please get in touch.
Dorothy E Prior GIBRALTAR
(From MY point of view, that Fred Smith is dubious..... There were several Alfred Smiths, and I have their links to the family, but none was ever called "Fred"! They were "Alfie", "Fofi", and a few others, but no Fred.... And certainly none had anything to do with orphanages in UK.
Yes - the Robert Smith in America is a 2nd or 3rd cousin of mine. We have met and corresponded)

| Dear Dorothy, Thank you for the postings, I really do appreciate it. I am on my way for an appointment at 8:15 and will be away for the weekend. I will be in contact soon and I am looking forward hearing what you can tell me regarding your family. The fact that you have an Alfred Smith is so exciting - my ggrandfather was Alfred and his son my grandfather was Frederick. Thank you once again, Take care, Karin Serfontein nee Smith, SOUTH AFRICA |

| Hi Dorothy, I have a few minutes before leaving for Johannesburg. I am interested in Robert Smith's family (Robert living in the US) because of a 11/12 DNA match. Rob's DNA matches with my causin Ernest Fred Smith. Fred in the orphanage is not mine, I have checked with the orhpanage - he is not the man I am looking for. According to Ancestry.com orphan Fred Smith was born 1886 in Gibraltar (but the year of birth are incorrect information on Ancestry) I have received the information from the Orphanage, Fred was born ca 1885, his father was Edwin and his mother Catherine. Fred only left the Orphanage in 1905 he had no brothers but three sisters. My Frederick Ernest born ca 1886, son of Alfred Smith had two brothers, I am not aware of any other siblings. My e-mail adress is kss [ AT ] mweb.co.za. I would love to hear from you. Thank you for being so kind in contacting me, it has been a long and difficult road for me in finding something. Enjoy a beautiful day, From a cold SA, Karin. |
