PostSubject: A Smith Lost in Glasgow... and Paisley maybe?   Sun 6 Dec 2009 - 17:41

I am searching for ancestral information on William SMITH who married Rosann SIMPSON in Glasgow in 1866 and lived at 92 John St in the Barony Parish during the 1891 census.

According to the Aug 31,1866 marriage record
- their respective parents John SMITH (shoemaker)/ Mary THOMSON & William SIMPSON (deceased iron moulder)/ Susan KENNEDY (or Kennery?)
- William (age 21) & Rosann (age 23) both resided at 10 Barrack St., Calton of Bridgeton of Glasgow;

The census showing the Glasgow residences for 1881(Calton) & 1891(Barony/Bridgeton) indicate that
- William's birth place was Renfrewshire, Paisley
- Rosann was also Rose Anne, Rose Ann, Rosana & Rosina (a rose by any other name ...)
- eldest daughter Annie was born 1-2 years prior to 1866 wedding.

I have searched Scots Origins & FamilySearch websites for William's 1844-6 birth to any Smith/Thomson parents in Renfrew or Glasgow to no avail. I did find an 1849 Paisley Abbey christening of a possible sibling John to John SMITH & Mary Ann THOMSON through FamilySearch but this could not be confirmed with Scots Origin records. So ends my trail.

Is there a connection? If not, any ideas?

Yours in frustration,

Ron Smith (I think!!)

Hi Ron,

A belated Welcome to Smith Chat, from me, and thank you for sharing this information. Great to see another member posting their Scottish Smith interests. Thank you and good luck with your searches, and fingers crossed someone else with interests in the same area will be able to help.

I'll re-pin this topic to the Calendar for a couple of weeks. As time goes on, we're hoping that more researchers will post about their Smith families of Scotland on this board. I noticed you also posted a copy of your Topic on the North American Forum. That's really helpful, thank you very much, & Gillian already replied to you there.
