SMITH-RADCLIFFE-HAASE-PAPENAU-DECANTER-BLANCHARD

Trying to find the Smith history and relations in/from PA and WI, and
the Radcliffe/Radcliff family from Isle of Man...

...Worden G. SMITH [Born ~1868 in Pennsylvania
- lived mostly in and died in West Allis, WI
…Married in ____ to Pearl E. RADCLIFFE [Born ~1869 in Wisconsin
- Died ? in West Allis]. Worden was an "Expert Accountant",
reportedly a bookkeeper in Factory
...Wordon's Dad (name = ?) was also born in Pennsylvania
and his mom (name = ?) was born in Canada (French Canadian)
...any help going back further on Worden G. Smith (either paternal or maternal) is greatly appreciated!

Worden and Pearl Smith (nee Radcliffe) had 7 children all in West
Allis/Milwaukee, WI:
(1) Harvey E. Smith (1898 - ?, married 2x: Betty Smith and
Sue Smith), (2) Nilla Bell Smith (1899-1975 -k'garden teacher), (3) Helen Smith (twin to Nilla - infant death), (4) Ruth L. Smith (teacher, died at 35), (5) Florence P. Trotts (nee Smith, married Kenneth Trotts and had 3 kids JoAnne, Sharon and ?? Trotts),
(6) my GF, DWIGHT W. SMITH (1903-1981, married to my GM,Phoebe Smith (nee Haase nee Papenau nee Decanter-Blanchard)
and they had 5 kids:
Dwight Smith, Shirley Patzwald nee Smith, Beth Wilcox (nee Smith now in
Wautoma, WI), Robert Smith (now in Daytona, FL), Marlys Blader-Crites (nee Smith, now in Stevens Point, WI), and (7) Chester M. Smith

I've gotten my GM, Phoebe Haase back to 1794 in Canada and New York from her maternal side via Papenau nee Decanter-Blanchard)

But I digress! Back to the Smith's
...The 1910 and 1920 Census of West Allis, Milwaukee, Wisconsin says
Pearl Smith's (nee Radcliff) father was born in Isle of Man
and her mom "Christena Radcliffe" was born in Germany ~1834
...Christena reportedly had 6 kids but only 2 alive by 1910 (Pearl and _____)

...Who is this Radcliffe from the Isle of Man?! I'd est he was born ~
1825-1834 and married Christena Radcliffe around 1852-ish, but have no idea if that was in Isle of Man or WI

Thanks all!

wave Hi genradcliffe
& thanks for telling us about all this. Interesting!

As you can see, I've moved your original post here onto our USA & Canada Board.....
(British Smiths & related surnames to North America)

A copy has also been quoted on the UK Board (edit - Isle of Man Board)
Link >>Smiths in USA - connection Radcliffe from ISLE OF MAN >>
& I've written a similar brief reply to you on there, and you might want to click on "watch this topic" on there also. Will study this again more carefully after the holiday and see if can come up with anything for helping you to trace the Radcliffe family from the Isle of Man.
Until then - all best wishes of the Season to you and yours :santa:

Very Happy Hi genradcliffe and Happy New Year to you.

I got back to you at last!
I'm thinking you might already have the 1880 US Census data for Pearl & her mum Christina? If not - below is the transcription from the LDS database.......
(but you'd need to check the original image of course to be sure this is a correct transciption)

Anyway, this confirms that Christina is widowed by 1880, & that she was born in Wurtenburg (presumably that is in Germany)

This says that Pearl's father was born in England, but of course, that proves nothing, as many people think of the Isle of Man as being part of England, & Christina probably thought that too and gave that information. The later Census's you have are probably more precise - ie Isle of Man for father's birthplace.

1880 US Census Wisconsin
LDS FHL Film 1255447 NA Film Number T9-1447 Page No 243A
Census Place 2nd Ward, Sheboygan, Sheboygan, Wisconsin

Name Relation Marital Status Gender Race Age Birthplace Occupation Father's Birthplace Mother's Birthplace
Christine RADCLIFFE Self W Female W 44 WURTENBURG Washing WURTENBURG WURTENBURG
John RADCLIFFE Son S Male W 13 WI Xlwek In Aroew ENGLAND WUSTENBURG
Perle RADCLIFFE Dau S Female W 11 WI At School ENGLAND WUSTENBURG
Freddie RADCLIFFE Son S Male W 8 WI At School ENGLAND WUSTENBURG

Is there a US Census for 10 years earlier than this?? ie around 1870? If so, Pearl's dad should probably be included on that one, as her younger brother Freddie, according to the above, was born c1872.
If you could get Pearl and Worden's marriage record (?? 1890s) then that would probably give you Pearl's father's name.

Hope you can find Mr. Radcliffe's first name at least, & year of birth would be even better. haa haa good stuff!! It would be very interesting to be able to follow it through & see if we can trace his birth/baptism in the Isle of Man.

Chat again soon & please keep us informed. wave
