Hi everybody, just registered with this great looking forum and am introducing myself.
My name is Maureen and I was born in Liverpool. My brothers and sisters and I have been interested in our famhist for just over 30 years now after two of my brothers started it all and passed the 'bug' onto the rest of us.
Our Smith ancestors are proving to be a problem in that we're not sure where exactly they originated from though I have an idea it might be Ireland, like our Delaneys.
Anyway, my great grandfather, James Reid b.abt. 1847 (place unknown) married a young lady named Elizabeth Smith b. about 1852 (?). I say this because their wedding certificate shows her as 'minor' when they married in Liverpool in November 1870. Her father was Thomas Smith, labourer.
The only clue we have is that both James Reid (and his family) and Elizabeth and the Smith family all lived in Furlong Street, Liverpool (off the Scotland Road area) at the time of the wedding. Elizabeth had at least one brother - James Smith.
After Elizabeth gave birth to my gandfather - Christopher Reid - in 1872 she seems to disappear, so does her husband James Reid but he would most likely be away at sea, but Elizabeth is not recorded in the 1881 census although their son Christopher IS! He's living with his uncle and aunt - Charles and Mary Lucas in Liverpool who were both born in Ireland.
This is what's leading me to believe that she may have been born in Ireland too.
However, having said this, our Dad always maintained that he had both Irish and Scottish blood in him. We know that our Delaneys were from Ballinakill, Ireland but where were his Reids from...............................
Anyway, I can trace Christopher Reid (my grandfather) right through to his death and we have copies of his seafaring records plus photos of him too.
It's his parents who are proving elusive.
Having found this new forum I'm hoping that maybe some other member(s) might be researching the same family. Elizabeth's brother James Smith will have most likely married and produced offspring too - hopefully!
In the meantime, nice to be here!
