wave Hi everybody, just registered with this great looking forum and am introducing myself.

My name is Maureen and I was born in Liverpool. My brothers and sisters and I have been interested in our famhist for just over 30 years now after two of my brothers started it all and passed the 'bug' onto the rest of us.

Our Smith ancestors are proving to be a problem in that we're not sure where exactly they originated from though I have an idea it might be Ireland, like our Delaneys.

Anyway, my great grandfather, James Reid b.abt. 1847 (place unknown) married a young lady named Elizabeth Smith b. about 1852 (?). I say this because their wedding certificate shows her as 'minor' when they married in Liverpool in November 1870. Her father was Thomas Smith, labourer.

The only clue we have is that both James Reid (and his family) and Elizabeth and the Smith family all lived in Furlong Street, Liverpool (off the Scotland Road area) at the time of the wedding. Elizabeth had at least one brother - James Smith.

After Elizabeth gave birth to my gandfather - Christopher Reid - in 1872 she seems to disappear, so does her husband James Reid but he would most likely be away at sea, but Elizabeth is not recorded in the 1881 census although their son Christopher IS! He's living with his uncle and aunt - Charles and Mary Lucas in Liverpool who were both born in Ireland.

This is what's leading me to believe that she may have been born in Ireland too.

However, having said this, our Dad always maintained that he had both Irish and Scottish blood in him. We know that our Delaneys were from Ballinakill, Ireland but where were his Reids from...............................

Anyway, I can trace Christopher Reid (my grandfather) right through to his death and we have copies of his seafaring records plus photos of him too.

It's his parents who are proving elusive.

Having found this new forum I'm hoping that maybe some other member(s) might be researching the same family. Elizabeth's brother James Smith will have most likely married and produced offspring too - hopefully!

In the meantime, nice to be here! Big Smile

hello you .......... My Smiths start with Elizabeth SMITH b. abt. 1853(ish) (Ireland I think!). Her father was Thomas SMITH a labourer whilst James' father was Alexander REID, a cooper.

In October 1870 Elizabeth married James REID b.abt. 1848 (ish) in Liverpool where both families were living in Furlong Street, off Hopwood Street. James was a seafarer and, after their marriage I cannot find him on any census records so I reckon he was away at sea a lot.

The wedding certificate shows James a FULL age but Elizabeth as MINOR, which is why I say (ish) after both their names.

Witnesses at the wedding were John PRITCHARd and Mary MORGAN.

I found the following census records and I think these are our Smiths

1871 Census Lightbody St St Aidan Scotland Ward.

Head Thomas Smith age 46 Dock Labourer b Ireland
Wife Margaret Smith age 38 b Ireland
Boarder Patrick Cearns 29 b Bradford
Visitor Jane Cahern Wid 45 b Ireland
Daug Jane ... age 14 Pupil Teacher b Ireland

1871 Census 33 Walmsley St St Aidan Scotland Ward

Head Elizabeth Reed Married age 18 b Ireland

All the streets - Furlong, Walmsley & Lightbody were in same area....

Elizabeth also disappears after the birth of their son, Christopher Reid, my grandfather, in 1872.

In 1881 census Elizabeth is missing (so is James but I think he's away at sea), however, their son Christopher is recorded as living with an uncle and aunt - Charles and Mary LUCAS - see below...............

1881 census shows: Saltney Street, Liverpool

Charles LUCAS aged 51 yrs, Dock Labourer b. Ireland

Mary LUCAS aged 30 yrs, Wife b. Irlenad.
Christopher REED aged 9 yrs, b. 1872 Nephew, Scholar b. Liverpool

Note that Christopher's surname has been mis-spelt. Anyway, I hope to find somebody else who can identify with my Smith ancestors and shed some light on where they originated from.

Hi Maureen, You mentioned about Scottish blood.. I have been searching for you, I searched for Elizabeth Smith born 1852 (five years either side) and England, Scotland Ireland and Wales! with a father named Thomas Smith. This doesn't mean it's the correct family .. but ..

Elizabeth Smith born 1.10.1850 in Eddlestone Peebles Scotland parents Thomas Smith and Jane Ross.

This Elizabeth has 4 siblings Isabella born 1842, William born 1845, Thomas born 1848 then James born 23.8.1852.

mattycat This is all I have found but again I did say I haven't got all records!

Hi Mattycat, you are kind to have looked up the above info - thank you so much. It is highly possible that my Elizabeth Smith was born in Scotland though we did assume that she was from Ireland because her son, my grandfather, was living with an Irish uncle and aunt in 1881 census Liverpool.

I will transfer the info into my famhist spreadsheet and work on that further. Once again thank you so much.

Sorry to hear that your cat isn't with you any longer but I'm certain he enjoyed a very happy life when he was.

kind regards, Maureen

P.S. Did you get the info from a census record Mattycat? Only I was wondering if it gave any occupations at all? Sorry to be cheeky.

Hello again Maureen,

As I found the parents of Elizabeth Smith = Thomas Smith & Jane Ross (searched for a marriage but no luck) so I searched for Janes birth in Scotland .. several so here goes.

Jane Ross birth 12.10.1815 Glasgow Lanark Scotland
parents James Ross and Mary Aird (brother Robert 28.4.1813)

Jane Ross birth 28.3.1821 .. bapt. 14.2.1831 in Stair Ayrshire
parents John Ross & Helen Auld

Jane Ross birth 27.1.1822 Girvan Aryshire Scotland
parents John Ross and Mary McBride

Jane Ross born 29.8.1823 in Glasgow Scotland

None of these may be your ancestor but I have just looked at Scotland as there were 51 in total all over the UK.
