A separate board for "Liverpool and Lancashire South-West - Smith and related surnames & Local History Interests" is now included under the Lancashire section of "North West England & Isle of Man" ...

Apart from the genealogy side, we plan to develop the board in connection with the cultural diversity and importance of the City of Liverpool past and present, and to demonstrate our own support of Liverpool as Capital of Culture 2008....

Liverpool: European Capital of Culture 2008

The following notes are taken from the University of Liverpool's website.
(a link is provided below)

What is the Capital of Culture?
It's a programme which celebrates cultural excellence and encourages cities to develop and innovate culturally. It's run by the European Union to show that culture is central to city life, and contributes to regeneration, social inclusion, education and business.

Why was Liverpool chosen?
The judges praised the city's energy and vitality. They were particularly impressed that the whole city was involved in the bid, and this gave Liverpool the edge over its competitors.

And for the future?
2008 is just the start for Liverpool. Capital of Culture will bring in billions of pounds of investment in regeneration, development and the economy, which will have a lasting effect on the city's future.
