Hi James and welcome to Smith chat! I am sure we shall be able to come up with some ideas for you. Have you tried the UK census collection at all? Or the births, marriages and deaths databases? Keep in touch and talk again soon.
Gillian

Hi James and Gillian,

Welcome James to Smith Chat, good to see you here. As you can see, we've now moved your Topic to here, on Gillian's "Liverpool & South-West Lancashire Board", and as a researcher of "Smiths of Lancashire", you've now been included in our "Red Usergroup"
- Smith Project Lan-WRY-IoM.

As well as the bmd's as suggested by Gillian, (to find Edward & Mary's marriage - unless you already have details of it?), & the "Census collections" - have you tried initially, the 1901 Census yet - to try and find where they were living in Liverpool at that time?

We'll all chat again about this, I'm sure - but in the meantime
James, also check our "Links Cabinet" - http://www.smithfamilies.org.uk/links/
where we have a wealth of website links that you'll probably find helpful.

Please keep us informed of your progress, James.

Hi Gillian,

The following is all the information I have on my father's early life in Liverpool.

My Grandfather Edward Smith married Mary Carroll in 1898 at St. Mary's church on Highfield Street in Liverpool.

My father John Henry Smith was born May 1901 and he lived on Arley Street in Liverpool.

He cam to the United States in 1925 and died in 1959 in Chicago, Illinois.

I am trying to find out if his brother Edward or his sister Kathleen lived in Liverpool.

I tried the UK census for 1891 and 1901 with no success.

Can you give me information on making a donation to the this website. Do I need to donate in US dollars or otherwise? Please let me know.

Thank you,

James Phillip Smith

Hi James,

Thanks for additional information. Gillian's not around at the moment - so will I do?!! Very Happy

I see that your father wasn't born until May in 1901, so he won't be included in the 1901 Census, which took place on the 31 March 1901. Do you know whether his siblings Edward and Kathleen were younger or older than your father?

You might already have checked the following, but just in case you haven't...... this is a list of Edward Smiths aged 20 to 26, in the 1901 Census Index for Liverpool at http://www.1901censusonline.com/

Name Age Where born Administrative county Civil parish Occupation

Edward Smith 20 Liverpool Lancashire West Derby Camera Maker
Edward Smith 20 Liverpool Lancashire Kirkdale Shipping Clerk Millers
Edward S Smith 20 Liverpool Lancs West Derby Grocer
Edward Smith 21 Bottle Liverpool Kirkdale Flinter Carter [this will be Bootle, not Bottle!!]
Edward Smith 21 Lancs Liverpool Liverpool West Derby Book Binder
Edward Smith 23 Lancr Liverpool Everton Hammerman
Edward Smith 24 Lancs Liverpool Liverpool Everton General Carter
Edward S Smith 26 Lancs Liverpool Lancashire West Derby Chemical Engineer

Have you got your grandparents' marriage certificate?
if not you could order it from the GRO quoting reference - Volume/page 8b-292
This is from freebmd at http://www.freebmd.org.uk/
Marriages Dec Quarter 1898
CARROLL Mary Liverpool 8b 292
SMITH Edward Liverpool 8b 292

or directly from Liverpool Registry Office, by quoting ref REG_LP/235/153
This is from LancashireBMD http://www.lancashirebmd.org.uk/cgi/marrind.cgi
Lancashire Marriage Indexes 1898
CARROLL Mary SMITH Edward 1898 Liverpool,
Register Office or Registrar Attended Liverpool Lancashire
Click on this reference REG_LP/235/153, for a form you can print out to send to Liverpool.

Not sure if any of that is much help to you James, but please keep us informed how its all going. good stuff!!

Carole

PS - About your other query - thanks very much James, & I've just updated the FAQ about donations, here >>> FAQ: How do I....? >>>>

Hi Carole,

Thank you for the information, my sister Kathleen has our Grandparents' marriage certificate, but it does not list the names of mothers' on it.

Is it possible to obtain a marriage certificate from the catholic church or diosese in Liverpool? It may have more details recorded on it.

Also, is there someone who researches families in the Smith chat.

I have tried to research my family through the LDS record center but didn't have much luck in Wyoming. The LDS Headquarters are in Salt Lake City, UT. I will keep trying.

Thank You,

James

Hi James

http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl

Births, marriages and deaths in England, Scotland and Wales were given civil registration from 1837 onward. This means that there should be civil registrations of your grandparents' births unless they came from overseas. The above website might help in this search and as you can see, it is a free search and then you can order a certificate. The birth certificate is the most accurate way of ascertaining the mother's name.

The LDS records are most useful for births/baptisms before 1837. In those days the church (predominantly Church of England) kept the records. In those days members of other faiths frequently had to report to the local C/E church to be ''registered'' as it were. The old church records are now held by various record offices and are being transcribed as an ongoing project. They are gradually becoming available on line.

Hope this helps a little, keep in touch, Gillian

Hi James
Good to hear from you again! Seems you have a bit of a problem and I am not sure how to answer you. However, we have a moderator based in USA and I have asked him whether he is able to offer advice. It would be good to have the information for others in the future so we need to know how this is done.
Hope you are making progress and good luck with the computer :(Comp1): don't let it win! Gillian

James,

In the past I have used PayPal (see http://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=p/gen/about-outside). First you will need to see if the records office uses PayPal and if they do you will need to create an account and fund it. I have used it to purchas items in England. I have also found PayPal a useful tool for internet transactions (eBay, craigslist, etc)

A second alternative is to pay via credit card. Card company will make the necessary monetary conversion – might be a small service fee.

Hope this helps

Hi James

Good news that you are making progress!

James I think if you use the 'paypal' web site they do the currency conversion for you? Perhaps you could check that out and save yourself a journey? Please let me know how you get on, thanks.

Good luck Gillian

Hi Gillian ,Thanks for the info on Paypal. Was able to get my Grandfather/grandmothers marriage certificate with it. The next step will be trying to obtain the 1911 census in Liverpool that may show my fathers brothers and sisters. Is there someone in Smith Chat who does this service for a fee? Thank you, Jim Smith

Hi Jim!

I am pleased to hear that you have made some progress and that the information was useful. Below is the link to the 1911 UK census.

www.1911census.org.uk/

You can make a basic search but then you need to purchase 'tokens/credits' to view either the transcriptions or the original records which are fascinating. The 'Find My Past' website sells the credits and I think you should be able to use Pay Pal again.

To my knowledge there is no one on this site who undertakes paid searches. Our contributions are voluntary and unfortunately the 1911 census is not cheap to access at the moment. I think it is worth you searching yourself and perhaps you will be pleasantly surprised by your success?

Good luck and please let us know how you progress. Gillian
