PostSubject: Charles HUGHES in Toxteth 1820s / b:c1797 but where?   Sat 9 Jun 2007 - 15:06

Charles HUGHES lived in Toxteth Park by the 1820s.
Born c1797 but where in England or Wales?

Background info.......
About his son, my Great-Great-Great Grandad George HUGHES:-

George Hughes, Bpt 11 May 1823 Liverpool St Nicholas.
Son of Charles & Ellen Hughes

George, a Mariner married Elizabeth Banton
at St James, Toxteth Park in 1840 (then they moved to Fleetwood)

Their marriage certificate shows......
George's father: Charles Hughes, Labourer, Residence Toxteth Park.

Charles is the one for whom I'm now looking for birthplace (born c1797)

1841 Census Toxteth Park - Charles shown as "no, not born this county" -
ie: not born in Lancashire.

Its seeming that Charles might have died before 1851 Census - so still have no clue as to his birthplace, except probably somewhere in England or Wales. (A lot of Welsh Hughes moved to Liverpool - so that's possible)

Have been unable to find a possible marriage in Liverpool or anywhere else for Charles & Ellen. (except - only marriage from the IGI that holds any hazy possibility is one in Dumfries Scotland 1813, to Ellenor Hammel. Only possible because the name Ellenor/Eleanor is passed down through my Hughes family, but in 1813, Charles only aged about 16, so its unlikely)

Other children of Charles & Ellen Hughes.
(might be others I haven't found yet)

Note - George & his sister Ellenor - baptised on the same date:

George and Ellenor HUGHES : Children of Charles & Ellen Hughes
bpt 11 May 1823 Liverpool St Nicholas.

* Charles HUGHES : Child of Charles & Ellen Hughes
bpt 21 September 1827 Liverpool St Nicholas.

The following one is possible, though not probable, but noted for the record.
Jane Eleanor Hughes : Child of Charles & Eleanor Hughes
bpt 29 May 1825 Liverpool St Peter.

Ellen Hughes, Charles Snr's wife, had died sometime between 1827 & 1833, & so not present on 1841 Census.

(still looking for Ellen's burial record, probably Toxteth Park)

Widowed Charles had remarried - I believe the following is the correct record:-

Charles Hughes m Catherine Padley : 20 January 1833 Edge Hill St Marys.
(nb: Edge Hill is in Liverpool)

1841 Census details for household of Charles & Catherine......
_________________________________________________________

1841 Census HO.107.568/12
Borough of Liverpool : "Extra-Parochial Place called Toxteth Park"
Folio 65 / page 8. No 60 Shaws Court.

Charles Hughes, 44, Railway Conductor (No, not born in Lancashire)
[last column asks - born Scotland, Ireland or Foreign Parts - not completed - so indicates b: England or Wales]
Catherine Hughes, 31 (or ?37) (Yes, born in Lancashire)
*Charles Hughes, 13, (Yes, born in Lancashire)
**Sarah Ann Hughes, 4, (Yes, born in Lancashire)
_________________________________________________________

* Charles Jnr, note - son of Charles & Ellen (1827 baptism noted above)
** Sarah Ann, dau of Charles & Catherine - I believe this is the correct bptsm record:-

Sarah Ann Hughes, child of Charles & Catherine Hughes
bpt 14 July 1837 Liverpool St Peters.

(only discrepancy/query about the above 1841 data is that Charles is shown as Railway Conductor, but a year earlier on son George's Marriage Certificate, Charles is shown as Labourer)

Charles Snr possibly died between 1841 & 1851, as unable to find him in the 1851 Census. Many many Hughes indexed for Catherines, younger Charles's, & Sarah Hughes's in Liverpool 1851 and I'm gradually working through them all - not found correct ones yet. Keep going back to continue the search! wave
