Sarah and children came to Australia after John died in 1901. not sure what year

...... I notice that you have put "Blackburn" in brackets after mentioning the marriage of your grandparents John Jessop Smith and Sarah Ann Holden. Is this meaning that they were married in Blackburn East Lancashire (my own home town), and that they lived there until Sarah and the children emigrated? And if so, is it possible that John Jessop Smith died in Blackburn?

:(kit): Carole and Maxine Thank you for your warm welcome.

Elizabeth Jessop was from Attercliffe Sheffield area.
My Greatgrand mother Sarah Ann Holden born in Blackburn
and her father Robert was born in Churchtown about 1822

Hi Carole
I have a enquiry, in the census information I got about
Sarah Ann Holden, she was born in Blackburn Lancashire about 1862.
On her marriage certificate it gives her birthplace as Preston Lancashire.
Also her youngest child Samuel was supposedly gone back to Sheffield. I am not sure if it was before WW2 or after, he had a wife and couple of children

wave Hi tessob,

Copied your message here from the topic on the West Riding Board.

It's unusual that the bride or groom's place of birth would be shown on a marriage certificate. Could it just be that Preston was the place that Sarah had been living before her marriage?

For interest, might be co-incidence, but I note that Sarah's father Robert Holden was from Churchtown - that is part of Garstang, which is very close to Preston and some people might consider as "Preston area". (Also - Blackburn & Preston might have been considered by some as roughly one and the same place, especially if recorded on the West Riding Yorkshire Census. But that's only a long-shot speculation.)

The only way to know for sure whether Sarah was born in Blackburn or Preston is to seek out her birth registration/certificate. And/or where were her parents living at the time of the 1861 Census?

I've just checked the LancashireBMD database -
http://www.lancashirebmd.org.uk/cgi/birthind.cgi?county=lancashire
(both Blackburn District and Preston District births for those years are now included on that database)

these are the possible births for 1861-63
(no Sarah or Sarah Ann Holden births in Blackburn District 1861)

Blackburn District 1862
Surname /Forename(s) / Sub-District /Registers At /Reference
HOLDEN Sarah Ann, Blackburn Blackburn B/98/97
HOLDEN Sarah Darwen Blackburn D/35/38
HOLDEN Sarah Darwen Blackburn D/35/73

Blackburn District 1863
Surname /Forename(s) / Sub-District /Registers At /Reference
HOLDEN Sarah Ann, Blackburn Blackburn B/103/99
HOLDEN Sarah Ann Darwen Blackburn D/37/76
HOLDEN Sarah Blackburn Blackburn B/99/58

Preston District - there only appears to be this one......
but birth in Chipping, not Preston town.
1861
Surname /Forename(s) / Sub-District /Registers At /Reference
HOLDEN Sarah Chipping Preston CH/6/29

Where was Sarah married? Was it Blackburn - and if so which church?

Will just pop back to your West Riding Board Topic now.Smith family - Attercliffe, Sheffield, See you later aligator wave

Hi tessob,

Thanks very much for the update. Hope someone else recognises the Holden and/or Lennox connection. With the surname Lennox it looks possible that Emma's ancestors might orginally have been from Scotland, before moving over the border to Carlisle.

Thanks Carole much appreciated.
Something keeps bugging me about her father and his name whether it is John or Robert Holden. Until I get his death certificate it wont stop.

Hi again

I have now dug out my connection to the Lennox (Linnox etc) family from Rockcliffe, Cumberland.

Sarah Lennox married William Hewitt (my ancestor) at Rockcliffe in 1752. Do you think we may be distant relations?
