wave Hello everyone,
Was recently reading about the life of the artist L.S. Lowry, one of South-East Lancashire's famous sons. So thought would share these snippets of info with you, and a lovely "matchstalk men" video tribute to him, that I came across at YouTube.

Lowry is famous for his "matchstalk men" paintings of life scenes in northern England's industrial areas, early 20th century. During his life he painted well over 2000 pieces. Many of these depict street scenes around Salford area, and Pendlebury where he lived and worked for over forty years. His "day" job was as a door-to-door rent collector. His interest in painting was his sideline/hobby. Much of his work was not discovered until after his death.

More about L.S.Lowry
Honorary Master of Arts, Honorary Doctor of Letters.
Awarded the Freedom of the City of Salford

Laurence Stephen Lowry
born: 1st November 1887 in South Manchester
the only child of Robert Stephen Lowry (Irish-born)
and Elizabeth nee Hobson

L.S.Lowry never married, and had no children. Around 1912, he and his parents moved from Victoria Park, Rusholme to 117 Station Road, Pendlebury. He studied his craft at evening classes from 1905 at Manchester College of Art, All Saints, and from 1915 at Salford School of Art, where he developed the matchstalk figures concept.

In 1948 he moved from Pendlebury to Mottram-in-Longdendale, Cheshire,
Died 23 February 1976 aged 88, in Glossop, Derbyshire.
Buried Southern Cemetery, Chorlton, Manchester, beside his parents.

L.S. Lowry - continued from above

In 1977, inspired by Lowry's work, Manchester born singer/songwriters Michael Colman & Brian Burke wrote & recorded the hit single "Matchstalk Men & Matchstalk cats and dogs". It made No.1 in the UK Charts for 3 weeks in April 1978.

This Video is a lovely and happy celebration of Lowry's work -
the song and some of his paintings (might take a few seconds to load)

A large collection of Lowry's work is permanently on public display in the purpose built art gallery on Salford Quays, appropriately named, The Lowry, which was opened in 2000.

My second daughter was in the school choir which did the backing for this song. The two elder daughters played the guitar and had exciting experiences with the school choir making frequent appearances on television, particularly in 'Stars on Sunday'. Gillian
