PostSubject: Joseph Smith of Ingleton and Mary Jane Smith of Blackburn   Fri 27 Mar 2009 - 11:37

Hi,
Having great success with this site, thought I'd try another link. My Smith's came from Ingleton all descended from Joseph Waller Smith born 1799. This is another Joseph Waller Smith (1872), grandson of the above, who married a Mary Jane Smith in Blackburn in 1895 and lived at 60 Eccles Street, Blackburn with wife and two daughters in 1901. Ring any bells?

Very Happy Hi suronda,

Really glad that two distant cousins of yours, ellamac & moorgarth, have found you through your Barnoldswick topic!! That's brilliant!

Thanks very much for posting this new information. My own Smiths line have been in Blackburn since 1860 (& I'm still here!!). We have Mary's & Mary Ann's in our tree - but off top of my head at the minute, can't think that we have any Mary Jane's, so I'll have to check on that, and if I find anything possible - I'll get back to you about it.

Hi again suronda,
Am I correct thinking that you haven't yet got Mary Jane and Joseph's marriage certificate? You might already know this of course, but I see that their marriage is indexed in the LancashireBMD database, and you could order the certificate directly from Blackburn Registry Office using the reference given:

SMITH Joseph Waller
SMITH Mary Jane
1895 Blackburn Register Office or Registrar Attended
Registers held at Blackburn Lancashire
Ref: RM/126/47 (links to the printable form)

nb: "Registrar attended" plus "RM" reference indicates either non-conformist or Roman Catholic church, who as you might know couldn't register their own marriages until 1898.

Assuming that Mary Jane was about same age as Joseph Waller, I think there are 2 possible Mary Jane Smiths (up to age 3) on the 1881 Blackburn Census index (at the LDS site). Though of course she could have been born after the 1881 Census, but unlikely as married in 1895.
