PostSubject: Christopher Smith moved to Barnoldswick   Sat 6 Dec 2008 - 22:58

Hi,
I have recently discovered that one of the descendents of the Smith's of Ingleton I am researching moved to Barnoldswick prior to WW1.
His name was Christopher, known as Kit, and he was born in Ingleton in 1875 to William and Elizabeth. He was still in Ingleton, single, on the 1901 census but then married and had a family. I believe that a grandson(??) is still living in Barnoldswick as he visited a relative in Ingleton in the last year or two. I paid a flying visit to Barnoldswick Library today to look at their electoral registers, but the earliest they have is 1935. By the time this was found, didn't have time to study it. Checked burials up to 1954 for Christopher, but didn't find him. He possibly married a Margaret Burrows prior to his move, but not confirmed yet.
Ring any bells with anyone?

Suronda

Hi suronda,

Good luck with this, hope it does ring bells with someone. Fingers crossed.

As you probably know, Barnoldswick is on the East Lancs/WRYorks border. Is in the old traditional county of West Riding Yorkshire, but since 1974 in the new Administrative county of Lancashire. In view of this, I've posted a copy of your message on the West Riding Board - here....

where WRY researchers more likely to pick on it.

Good Luck suronda, & see you in the New Year!!

PS: I've contacted you separately about the other queries you had regarding the site.

My great grandmother Elizabeth Smith born in Ingleton was the sister of Kit Smith born in 1875.

She married in Burnley to John Kelly.

Hi, Then we are both descended from Elizabeth and John? They were the parents of Agnes Ann, my grandmother. What is your connection?

Hello again, I knew your grandmother Aunty Agnes very well.We visited her often. She also came to us in Rosegrove.

I am Thomas Kelly`s grandaughter, Tom of course being your grandmothers brother.

Your Uncle Gerald told me that the Smiths in our family were from Ingleton
and he mentioned Kit Smith to me, which was a great help, Smith being a common name, but Christopher Smith was`nt.

Our Christopher Smith was the only Christopher Smith born in Ingleton at that time. Which made it so much easier.

Uncle Gerald told me that his Uncle Kit used to visit Aunty Agnes when he was a child.

My mum was Tom`s daughter Kathleen.

Does any of this ring any bells? I always kept in touch with Uncle Gerald and I can remember Rose.

Yes, I remember staying overnight in a pub in Rosegrove when I was a child with my gran (on our way to Blackpool) but when I started the family tree last year I couldn't find anyone who knew who these relatives were. There was a boy and girl there, would that be you? If so, you took me to a park nearby to play on the swings. Don't know which pub it was, but do remember the name Kathleen and Tommy?? Please get in touch, I have lots of stuff about the Smith's of Ingleton including some photo's.

Hi suronda and ellamac

Christopher Smith was my Grandad who died in 1960 in Barnoldswick. Sometime after 1911 he moved back to Ingleton where my father was born in 1917, and then returned to Barnoldswick during WW2. Kit married Sarah Jackson from Brierfield. The person who visited Barnoldwick a few years ago was not his grandson, but in fact was my Dad now aged 91.

Must admit that the Smiths didn't have much imagination regarding names in the 19th/20th Century, there are so many Williams, Josephs, Wallers Agnes and Alices, it's a nightmare trying to follow the generations. Thomasina was refreshing until the spelling changes slightly.

Only just started on the family tree but have plugged quite a few gaps. Had one of the largest Smith families in Ingleton in the 1800's with 11/12 offspring.

Look forward to hearing more from the Kelly branch
