My Great-grandad Timothy Gardner Hughes.
Introduction to Timothy's story:
The story begins in Kirkham Lancashire in 1873, when Timothy was born. The son of William Hughes of Fleetwood, Captain - Merchant Service, and Margaret nee Gardner of Kirkham.
The story ends in Adelaide, South Australia 1947 where Timothy died, aged 74, and where he is buried.
From living in Lancaster with his wife and children, about 1905, he emigrated to Australia as a Bricklayer Journeyman.
My great grandmother, his wife, Eliza-Jane Hughes (nee Downes) was supposed to follow him with the children, but she didn't go. She just didn't want to go.
Their daughter Bertha Hughes, was my maternal grandma, born in Lancaster 1901 and so was aged only about 4 when her father left. Bertha never forgot her father Tim, & used to tell her own daughter (my mum) what she remembered about him. She always called him "my father", not dad. From the stories, we know that Timothy loved his children, which makes it all the more sad that they lost contact.
As well as my grandma, Timothy left 2 other children - the eldest was Harold, aged about 10 when his father left (born 1895 in Blackburn) and Beatrice, who was blind & then aged about 8 (born 1897 in Blackburn).
I'll continue to tell the story soon.Carole :ck-smile:
Here is part of my Hughes Ancestry Timeline - showing the 3 x Hughes Direct Line generations before Timothy ............
