| Hi Walr, I have searched for Mary Smythe & James Rutherfords marriage and sorry I have found nothing. I then tried for the marriage of James & Catherine. The strange thing is I have come up with a marriage for a James Rutherford & a Catherine Toton in 1862 but different from yours above.... Marriage ofJames Rutherford age 20 to Catherine Totton age 19 on the 25th October 1862 Civil Registration in Belfast County Antrim Ireland. Parents James Rutherford & James Totton or is this just the Civil marriage before the Church marriage? Let me know what you think and if I can help in any other way, no promises of success though lol mattycat ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Smith, Nuttall, Ingham,McDermott and more

| Hello walr, How are things going for you & your research? Any nearer to finding more information for Mary yet? Please let us know if there's anything we can do at the moment to try & help. Also wanted to mention that I've now added your Username to the "Smith-of Other UK" Usergroup. Only reason for this is - it means your name will be displayed in green - to differentiate from those who are researching Smith of Lancs, WRY & Isle of Man. | G'Day Mattycat, Managed to find my GF marriage and Birth info 1844, Belfast. Cannot find GGF details in Ireland. Have broadened my search to Northumberland where I have found a family of Rutherfords which fit the bill fairly well, trying to find (and prove) connections. I am beginning to feel that James father may have moved to Belfast seeking work etc, (given the position at the time), met and married Mary Smythe and produced my GF. I expect time will tell, along as I have enough left. Regards Wal |

| Well, Mattcat and Carole, thought I would update you on my progress. I expect you remember I was looking for James Rutherford and Mary Smyth. I have found a union in Manchester Cathredal in 1842 that fits the bill for time and name, more interestingly in the census it shows Mary as born in Ireland and James born in Scotland/Ireland. I think I am on the right track as I haven't been able to find another marriage of these two names that fits the time elements. Proving and connecting is another issue of course. It,s a beautiful balmy tropical night here in Nth Queensland. Having a lovely Barramundi and Mud Crab dinner and one or two bottles of red just for the hell of it. Wish you were here. Regards Wal :>>: |

| | walr wrote: | Carole, Thanks for going to that trouble, I will order the certificate. Yes, there are so many mary's around I have now taken to calling them "bloody mary's." God; did I say that.? Never mind I will get better as time goes by. I managed to check a census or two and found that Mary Smyth was born in Ireland or it appears that way, so it looks like I will be heading back to Belfast. Regards Wal | | Carole wrote: | Hi walr,
Yes - there are so many Mary Smiths, Smyths, Smythes!! I have a few in my family tree!!
When you have the certificate & if you decide that is definitely your Mary, married in Manchester - then we must be sure to put something on our East & South-East Lancashire Board >>>Here>>> and later to add your interests to >>>The Smith List, Lancs, WRY, IoM>>> So keep us informed, won't you.
But anyway - in the meantime - Here is a little party for you :ck-wink: Go to >>>Happy Birthday Walr - 9th September!!>>> |
| walr wrote: | Hello Carole, Could you tell me the advantage of ordering a birth cert from Manchester Cathedral when I have managed to download a copy that gives parents, addresses etc, not being smart, really want to know if there is any further detail on the purchased certificate. The only problem I have with this match is the occupation, both James and his father are listed in various places as mechanics. The marriage cert. of James Smythe and Catherine Totton in Belfast list his father as a carpenter. If you can make any sense out of this you are truly a wonderful moderator. How's mattycat these days, still plugging on I guess. Regards Wal |

I can not think of any more information from the birth certificate that you might get apart from where born but you might already have that and if a child has a twin the time is on the birth cert.
Hope this helps |

Hi Wal
Hope all is going Ok for you, & I'm sorry I wasn't around at the time you posted in April. I had quite a bit of time absent from the Forums during April & May due to a bout of illness & other stuff. I'm still catching up with posts that I missed!! And thanks very much Gillian and Maxine for stepping in here. Wal - about your queries...........

BUT, I'm curious...... as you've said "from Manchester Cathedral" and not "from Manchester Registry Office", I'm thinking you must mean that the document you have downloaded is perhaps the baptism record - is that correct? In which case - that will give the date of the baptism and possibly not the actual date of birth - which would be shown on the Birth registration certificate.

If you can make any sense out of this .... | Could it be possible that James Snr had been a Carpenter and then - perhaps training of mechanics began - so he went for the training??? Only thing I can think of!!

Chat again soon Wal & is the >> Aussie football >> season still plugging on down-under?? We're waiting for an update from JohnT at the moment I think.
