I believe we, Americans and English, have or had differing definition of big numbers.

American counting goes:

Thousand 1,000

Million 1,000,000

Billion 1,000,000,000

Trillion 1,000,000,000,000

Quote:From Wikipedia

For most of the 19th and 20th centuries, the United Kingdom uniformly used the long scale, while the United States of America used the short scale, so that usage of the two systems was often referred to as "British" and "American" respectively.
Hi all.

Sorry I've not been on, busy with rebuilding the audi engine. Good news is the engine runs as sweet as a nut. Bad news is it won't idle. There is a fault on the electronic control unit. As I disconnected the battery to charge it I think the throttle solenoid has to be re-calibrated. Having rebuilt the engine I begrudge paying audi over £100 to tell me the fault. So I have downloaded the diagnostic software onto my laptop and have the diagnostic plug coming off e-bay. So all being well ...

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for the parents of Joseph Smith who married Isabella Battersby 27 Dec 1796 in Bentham, West Riding of Yorkshire. I know he was a yeoman of Moorgarth, Ingleton, that he had a brother called Bryan, and he died in 1802 leaving one son Joseph Waller Smith. Any help tracing Joseph or Bryan prior to 1796 would be greatly appreciated.

Suronda

It National Friendship week. Hope you enjoy the following

His name was Fleming, and he was a poor Scottish farmer. One day, while

trying to make a living for his family, he heard a cry for help coming

from a nearby bog. He dropped his tools and ran to the bog.

There, mired to his waist in black muck, was a terrified boy, screaming

and struggling to free himself. Farmer Fleming saved the lad from what

could have been a slow and terrifying death.

The next day, a fancy carriage pulled ...

Greetings to a New Year

I hope 2008 finds you all in good spirits and ready for an exciting year.

This year has the potential to be an interesting year. We have Putin making a power grab in Russia, Pakistan is in turmoil, Iran and Korea continue to bluff the world with respect to their nuclear intentions, the establishment of a stable Iraqi government remains a goal, and Afghanistan is becoming more volatile. There are new governments in France, Australia, and England. And here in America ...

Smith's of County Wexford

Thomas Smith b. c. 1795, butcher of Co. Wexford. Daughter Catherine married in L'Pool to Peter Bryan/O'Brien (also of Wexford) 28 May 1839 at St. Mary's Edmund St., witn were James Gaul and Bridget Kevlin. Appears that Thomas also had sons in L'pool named Henry, James and Patrick (also butcher). Have had no success locating in Wexford yet, about 1/2 the parishes searched to date. It would have been so nice if England had included mother's names on something!

Any clues or suggestions accepted ...

Hi All,

We just had a little excitement here. I was about to review new post in the Smith Chat Forums as a severe thunderstorm passed through.

I knew we were expecting a bit of bad weather so I was using the laptop in the event of power fluctuations or electrical surges (did not want to chance frying my desktop PC).
HI

I'm new to the list and its nice to see so many people searching for Smiths. I have been searching my Smiths for 40 years with several visits to the UK. I can't believe from all these Smiths that I can't find a connection. Everyone knows when searching for Smiths there are MILLIONS.

I have traced back to a George SMITH who had a son Henry. Henry (on his wedding certificate) states his parents are George Smith and Jane Steele. First evidence of Henry is living with his Grandparents ...
