Good Morning Chatters,

Christmas is fast approaching. Thanksgiving marks the start for TV Christmas Specials on American TV. On Thanksgiving Day, there are normally several of the classic Christmas movies aired. These normally include one of more of the following: Miracle on 34th Street, The Christmas Story, It’s a Wonderful Life and the one that sets the bar – A Christmas Carol. The 1984 version of this classic stars George C. Scott, who was by far the best Scrooge ever cast. Now it’s possible not everyone agrees with this.

So, who do you think was the best Scrooge?

Hi Don!

Well, it had to be Alastair Sim in 1951!
What a wonderful storyline 'A Christmas carol' has. Even on radio it could bring up the goose bumps when I was a child! All those clanking chains as the ghost approached and my Father's face as he pretended to be terrified whilst we sat round the radio in the kitchen. I think radio developed imagination far more than TV does in this context.

cheers Gillian Shocked

Gillian,
I've seen this version many times and it’s not bad. Christmas!!

To quote from Wikipedia ”...Scott was cast in the role of Ebenezer Scrooge in a television adaptation of A Christmas Carol. Critics and the public alike praised his performance. Some have said his Scrooge ranks alongside Alastair Sim's portrayal in a 1950's theatrical film." However, I think Scott brings a commanding presence that is lacking in Sim's portrayal. shrug

Any other thoughts from Smith Chatters? wave

Maxine - Gillian, You know what - they are all good.

Several years ago we attended a live performance of A Christmas Carol at Ford's Theater. Another year we saw the Nutcracker Ballet at George Washington University’s Lisner Auditorium. This was ok, but I’d rather see the Christmas Carol again.
