Good Morning,

Do you know where the tallest office building was, outside of New York City, in 1914? Seattle.

Do you know the name of this building? Smith Tower.

This is news to me. I’ll have to add this historical tidbit to my trivia trove. Please go to the following link for information on Smith Tower. http://www.smithtower.com/index.html

What "Smith" structures do you know about?

Hola Don!
I am assuming that Smith Tower is the obelisk type building in the background? So what is in the foreground? It looks like a totem pole to me but perhaps that is Smith Tower?

In England Smith does not seem to be a name that inspires the building of memorials or anything else. I might be wrong but I doubt whether there is even a Smith tower. I hope someone is going to prove me wrong!

At one time there would have been plenty of 'Smithies' but they are few and far between these days.

Hasta la vista Gillian

Gillian, That is a totem pole foreground. Smith Tower is the tall building in the back with the pyramid shaped top.

I checked my old photos and found I had a snapshot of Smith Tower. We visited Seattle in 1991. Below is a photo of my wife, Ben, and myself. Smith Tower is the white building center-right. It is obviously, not the tallest building these days in Seattle.

Hi Don,

I have somehow found my way back to this Topic in your Beagle Log archive whilst sorting out "notable Smiths" stuff.

As a reminder for a future Calendar feature (one month in 2009) I'll add a note in our Notable Smiths collection about Lyman Cornelius Smith of the Smith-Corona typewriters company, etc, and it seems that he was responsible for the Smith Tower in Seattle that you wrote about. I also came across the following - it includes a revolving video-type image of the fabulous views from the top of the tower...........
>> Seattle Skyline from the Smith Tower >>
Its wonderful!!

Carole,

Yes that is a neat video-type image. More sites should do the same. Are you familiar with the "Microsoft Virtual Earth" web site? http://maps.live.com/default.aspx?v=2&cp=44.023938~-99.71&style=h&lvl=4&tilt=-89.875918865193&dir=0&alt=7689462.6842358
It’s addictive.

Thought for a future calendar. How about products Smiths have developed? Typewriters, firearms, buildings, music, shows, etc. Could be interesting.

Hi Don,

I haven't explored "Microsoft Virtual Earth" yet - but will do so! I'm wondering if it's similar to "Google Earth". I have that one installed on my computer & when I first got it - I became rather addicted to it for a while!!

Yes - well anyone in ancient or modern history or present day, named Smith who has done anything worthy of note can be included in our "Notable Smiths" collection. There are so many collected already that I think will keep the Calendar theme going until at least the end of 2009. But yes, perhaps we could do something like "Smith Inventors" for 2010. Shocked Oops that's a long time off!! the full 1911 UK census will be almost available to the public by that time! Very Happy
