Good Monday Morning, (sun)

In keeping with Monday’s theme I have a question about a series my wife and I enjoy - Miss Marple.

Jane Marple is an Agatha Christie fictional character. She is an elderly spinster who acts as an amateur detective and lives in the village of St. Mary Mead. She has been portrayed numerous times on screen, and is one of the most famous of Christie's creations.

Currently Geraldine McEwan is playing the lead role in the Miss Marple TV series.

I think her predecessor, Joan Hickson, was the best cast performer for this role. What do you think?

Can you name others who have played this role?

Hola Don!

I really enjoyed Joan Hickson as Miss Marple. Geraldine McEwen's version is not so attractive to me although possibly she wouuld appeal to younger viewers!

Like Carole I have the face of another wonderful actress who used to play Miss Marple in films. She was a great favourite in many roles but, like Carole, I can't recall her name at the moment. I hope it will come to me eventually! These 'senior moments' have a nasty habit of lasting a bit longer these days!!

Hasta la vista Gillian

Hello Very Happy

Yes I remember Margaret Rutherford. She made a lot of films beside playing Miss Marple.
I don't like the new Marple series the stories have been altered and some of them didn't even have Miss Marple in them.

Hola, Howdy & Hiya,

No I don't like the new Marple series either, jfs, But Margaret Rutherford - yes - that was the actress whose name I couldn't recall....
Dame Margaret Rutherford
For interest - here are some notes from a web-page about her - she took her mother's maiden name. That's understandable - when you read this about her father Shocked ......
Quote:
Margaret Rutherford, the daughter of William Benn and Florence Rutherford, was born on 11th May 1892.Her father was the brother of the politician John Benn. Before her birth, her father had murdered her grandfather, Julius Benn. As a result of this tragedy, Margaret took her mother's name. Margaret's mother then died when she was three years old and she was brought up by her aunt.
The story continues here >> Dame Margaret Rutherford >>

from another web-page..............
Quote:
Margaret Rutherford, Born on 11 May 1892, Died on 22 May 1972
Rutherford is perhaps best known as the indomitable title character in four "Miss Marple" mystery films of the 60s. Most of Rutherford's credits are British, but she won an Academy Award for her hilarious rendition of a daffy duchess down on her luck in the old-fashioned, all-star Hollywood anthology drama, "The V.I.P.s" (1963). This much-loved trouper was created a Dame Commander of the British Empire in the late 60s shortly before her death.
and more stuff about the films she's been in here >> Margaret Rutherford >>

Hi wave
That's very interesting about Margaret Rutherford, I think she was a very good actress and remember watching a lot of her films.

Yes I remember Alistair Simms, I watched a film of his a couple of weeks ago on Sky, The Green Light, he played a policeman who solved a murder in a hospital.

Hi Embarassed
I got the name of the film wrong it was called Green for Danger not The Green Light. Alistair Simms was also in The Lady Kilers with Alec Guiness of Star Wars fame.
