Forums Limited access - 2 weeks over the Easter period

Smith Chat is to be switched into "holiday mode" from approx
11pm BST Wednesday 8th April 2009 until the 22nd April.

During this period there will be limited access to the forums:
Members and Guests able to continue to browse the boards and read
the topics. Members able to log-in and continue to use the private
messaging facility, but not able to post new topics or replies on the boards.

Registration of new members temporarily unavailable during the same period.

Forumotion Upgrades
During the last month, our hosts, Forumotion, have implemented upgrades which affect
all forums they host. As a result, there are quite a number of new optional features.
Will consider more closely the possibility of configuring some of these for a trial after the Easter holidays - ie - any which might prove useful at Smith Chat.
Examples of features we might try.......
A pop-up Login box.
A "multi-quote" feature which provides a quick way
to quote from more than one post in a topic thread.

Other upgrades are non-optional features - which have been configured
already by Forumotion. These are mainly improved administrative tools,
but also changes to the displays of members' profiles the Memberslist.

The Memberslist
now includes members' Avatars in a new narrow left hand column.
Any member who hasn't already uploaded an Avatar, is now by
default given a silhouette pic by their name on the list!

However, there's one change to the >> Memberslist display >>
to be queried with Forumotion, which is that
the "Locations" column has been removed and replaced by the "loisirs" column.
(nb: Forumotion is France-based / "Loisirs" is French for "Leisure")
I much prefer to see members' locations listed, and hardly any members
(including myself) complete the "loisirs" section in their profile.

Usergroup Membership lists
continue todisplay the "Locations" Column.

Site Maintenance & Recent Server problems
There have recently been a few technical issues, which resulted in impaired navigation and very slow loading of the Forums pages and images. Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience caused. A lot of work has been done already on rectifying these issues, and more work is ongoing, including change of image server hosting for
our display images. Only a few more to move now, and all the display images will then
be hosted in the Smith Project's main site "smithfamilies.org.uk" Image Server.
Once complete, this should make for improvements to navigation as a whole.

Regular Monthly Limited Access periods
start this month, until further notice.
Smith Chat is to be switched into "limited access" mode from tonight, 20th May 2009, as near as possible to midnight BST. Until further notice, this will be done at this same time and date of every month, followed by a 9-10 days "limited access" period, from 21st to 30th/31st (then back to normal access - please continue to call in between 1st to 20th every month and participate on the boards).
