PostSubject: Exciting Weather   Wed 4 Jun 2008 - 22:05

Hi All,

We just had a little excitement here. I was about to review new post in the Smith Chat Forums as a severe thunderstorm passed through.

I knew we were expecting a bit of bad weather so I was using the laptop in the event of power fluctuations or electrical surges (did not want to chance frying my desktop PC). A good gust of wind came through, tree limbs came down. One branch hit the roof and shattered a skylight in the living room. (Wives don’t take events like this wellJ). Every thing is under control; the skylight opening has been secured (nothing like climbing onto the roof in the rain, the thunder storm had pasted) and the water and glass are cleaned up. Other than the skylight, there is only minor damage. I will be calling the insurance agent in the morning.

And what excitement did you have today?

Shocked Oh no - what a time you had of it Don!! Goodness me, glad to hear the storm caused only minor damage and that no-one was hurt. But even so - sounds a bit scary! The weather here in Lancashire is quite calm at the moment & we have another warm sunny day today.

I don't think I had anything very exciting yesterday!! Housework, shopping and some gardening, as well as some catching up with the Smith sites. But this afternoon will no doubt present more excitement as I'm seeing my grandson Ben after school - and our time together is always "fun-filled" Very Happy & we'll be going climbing trees again. He has a new "tree-climbing" task for me to achieve this week - to get a couple of branches higher up in one of our trees!! haaaa haaa - keep getting a bit higher in the tree each week - Supergran!!! Laughing hehehe

Have a great day everyone.

The storm was a bit more wide spread then I thought. The following link provides details. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/06/05/AR2008060500759.html?hpid=topnews

A new term weather forecasters are using is "rotating thunder storms". I guess this is a storm that is just a bit less powerful then a tornado.

Anyway, all is well and my only problem is getting through to the insurance claims office – for some reason the telephone lines are busy.

'' (Wives don’t take events like this wellJ). ''

Ho!Ho! Don I can think of one or two husbands who don't take such events well either! Just had to pick you up on that!

That must have been quite scarey and I have to admit I'm glad I wasn't there. The elements are very powerful and certainly teach us how weak we are by comparison.

We have just enjoyed two balmy summer days most of which have been spent in the garden trying to reclaim it from nature! Nature takes great liberties when we are away in Spain; tries to take over and was on the verge of succeeding this year. However, I believe we have now reestablished our claim to govern although the weeds are still making a last ditch stand! The blackberry is certainly detering the burglars but if we don't attack soon we won't be able to enter our own garden. I find I need a lot of protective clothing before I can overpower the brambles.

Today is more cloudy but the forecast is quite good so it may brighten later. As for excitement..........I'm all for the quiet life!

Cheers Gillian

Hi Don and Gillian,

Yes I think I'm more for the quiet life too Gillian Laughing apart from the escapades that Ben gets me to do!! ha ha. I can well imagine how your Cheshire garden would have needed much attention after your return from Spain. I've been here all the time trying to keep up with my garden, and everything has just been growing like mad & had a job keeping up with it. Been doing a bit more this morning. Cutting down an Ivy bush which has grown far too high up the side of the house. Ended up with a mountain of Ivy in the garden and still a lot more to cut down yet. Better get rid of the "mountain" so far I think, before do any more clipping.

Good luck with the insurance claims Don, and fingers crossed for no more "rotating thunder storms".

Have a great day!!

Hi Don, Caz,Gillian.
Hope all are well. Don how does your insurance premium fair.
If you have to make regular claims do they keep hiking the premium.
As I was off last week resting (I'd booked a week off work). I deceided to buy a shed online. Everyman should have a shed so they say. Although it's not classed as a shed untill you have mains power installed. Mine is now an official shed.
Joanne thinks I'm leaving her. I'm now looking for a plasma TV.....lol
Love to all

The insurance company’s claim office has been swamped due to last Wednesday’s storm. I now have a claim number and an adjuster should be here in a week or so. As for the insurance company upping the premium, that is a concern, but more so for homeowners who make frequent claims. This is our 2nd claim in 30 years, the first was for hail damage about 12 years ago.

Daz, buying a shed? Much more satisfying building it from scratch – then you can have a built in nook for the plasma TV and for the fridge for adult beverages. Very Happy

And all these years I really believed my husband was out there ''tidying the shed''!

Haa haa I like it Gillian!! Laughing

As for online shopping I've just been to the RNLI Lifeboat website to order Ben's birthday present - a remote control Pirate ship that he'd (we'd) like, and they had none in stock at the St Annes Lifeboat shop (where we go frequently).

Oh I'm looking forward to some fun with this in the Summer holidays!!

Last Christmas but one I got him a remote control RNLI Lifeboat - model of the original ones. We had a lot of adventures with that last year!! Including me having to waid through the pond to get the boat as it got stuck on some reeds. Have some photos of that escapade - will find and post later.

A great idea Don, I just didn't have the time. Then again the gazeebo I built was so big joanne thought of getting Paul McCartney to open it with a concert......lol.
The pirate ship looks great Cas. Nathan and Mikey would love that. What's this I hear from my mum about you up a tree and somebody asking Ben what you were doing up there.
Gillian I did ask Doug next door about his net curtains and he said that they may look daft but he can see out and his wife can't see in. And shed's need tidying every day.....lol.
love to all.

So that is why the vine is trained across the shed window......so that I can't see how hard he is working! I might feel guilty about him toiling away in there and want to go and 'help'.

Carole - that could be quite a conversation stopper...''I bought a pirate ship on the internet"! I hope you have the garb to go with it? Please don't get arrested in St Annes, we can't cope without you here! I hear the police cells are no better there than anywhere else. Gillian

Haaaaaaaa ha-ha-ha-ha oooh dread the thought, Gillian!!

Daz - let us know if you decide to have the concert in your gazeebo - if you can't book Paul - our Zoe has some friends who are a local band of "Beatle" look-alikes!!

As for me stuck up that tree that your mum told you about Daz!! Laughing Yes - that was in Ashleigh Barrrows in Darwen, near where Ben lives. I'd just got some new trainers and I'd said - "oh these will improve my tree climbing, Ben!" No sooner had I said it than he showed me the tree I should attempt. In my new trainies I got carried away up to about 8 to 10ft from the ground - but then got stuck!! Shocked didn't know how I was going to get down again ck-horrified Ben was sat high in a branch in the same tree and saw one of his classmates with her little brother across the Barrows. He shouted over to them. The little brother, age about 6, came running over, looked up at me and then shouted to his sister "Jessica!! come here quick, there's an old woman stuck up a tree!!" ck-hrrmm "Hey!!! less of the 'old'" says I. Jessica said "its Ben's grandma!!" I eventually managed to get down, hehehe!! Then to top it off!! Jessica, who thinks I am little (5ft 2") asked in a quite concerned way "do grandma's shrink when they get old?" ck-sad "wot!! I'm only 57" says I,
"haven't started to shrink just yet"
Children are so funny sometimes, aren't they!? Very Happy

Hehehehehe
the mental image of Carole stuck in the tree!

The only thing that shrinks on me is my age, as im going backward now. I'm back down to 40.....
