| My ancestors probably came from elsewhere but were living in Macclesfield in 1841-1851.
James Smith born around 1810 marries Mary Hodges. John Smith marries Hannah Hodges, sister of Mary. They married at Prestbury. James and John were master painters.
Their eldest daughter Hannah married someone named Howe. The Howe family seemed to remain around Pott Shrigley and Bollington. One became the eastae agent for the estate.
children were Hannah James John Caroline Jonathan - my 2X Great Grandfather William
My great great Grandfather Jonathan moved to Manchester around 1860 and married Catherine ( Kate Flynn) they lived in Ancoats. His siblings seemed to stay around Cheshire and did 'quite well'. Jonathan lived I would image in poverty and died in 1881 at the age of 41. The rest of his family stayed in Manchester - my great great Grandmother Kate Flynn died in 1913.
Their son, James my great grandfather married Mary Ann Coleman and eventually came to Wales around 1910. My Grandfather William Smith was born in 1895 and married Elizabeth Tovey in 1915, Connahs Quay. My Father William Smith was born in 1921 in Connahs Quay
I know some of my grandfathers family moved to Barrow in Furness.
Any information and links would be very welcome as I can't seem to track any of these Macclesfield Smiths and there were so many of them! |

Thanks very much for sharing this information Gill about your Smiths & related surnames, & we must see what we can do about finding more info on your Macclesfield Smiths.
As Daz is away for the weekend, I've just left a reply to you on his Look-ups Topic...... link: Prestbury Parish: Marriages 1637-1789 (Cheshire) I'm sure Daz will be glad to help if he possibly can.
Recently included a Cheshire Category in the Links Cabinet (see the drop-down menu & select "Cheshire genealogy databases/resources sites") Also loads of other good stuff in the Links Cabinet under the other Categories.
and a "Links thread" in this Cheshire Forum for posting any other Cheshire links - Post Cheshire Genealogy Sites Links -Chat again soon |
Hi Gill and Cas. Hope your both well. Sorry I've not been around but had a lot on at work. Been doing a bit of a trawl on the IGI index and found one cert' and one possible.
James Smith married Mary Hodge 24th June 1833 in Prestbury. On the IGI the Batch No is 8924431 sheet 09 and source call No 1553569.
The second I found has no batch No as it was sourced on film from their records. Caroline Smith born 23rd April 1834 (which fits). Parents are James and Mary Smith. Film No 450980 Ref No 118104.
Hope this helps, well it's a start. I'll keep digging. Love to all Daz xxx _________________ My family are like stars in the night sky of my life. Always there at the end of the day. | Hi Gill,
Hope all is going Ok for you. How's it going with the Macclesfield research, any more success? Interested to know, so hope you'll keep us informed
Been having a tidy up, and have just moved an old message of yours from last year on the "General" board to our East & South-East Lancs Board (in view of your mention of Bury and Manchester). Was going to put a copy on here too - but then was reminded that your Smith interests are already here (as above)
Your Topic on East & S-East Lancs Board is....... >> SMITH Bury, Manchester (& Macclesfield Cheshire) >>
Look forward to chatting with you again soon Gill.
