PostSubject: Smith family Gloucester, Kent and Manchester   Tue 12 May 2009 - 13:45

I have just joined today so I hope I am doing this right.

Maybe the part of my family tree which I know will interest other members.

My grandfather was Thomas George Wentworth Smith born c 1854. Have not yet been able to trace his birth certificate.

1881 Census gives his birth district as Cheltenham, Gloucester, and he is living in Denmark Street, Leicester St. Margaret, Leicester, with his first wife Annette (nee Shelton) and their daughter Ernestine.

1891 Census gives his birth district as Kent and he is living in Bedford Street, Moss Side, Manchester, with his first wife Annette (nee Shelton) and their children Charles - born Leicester, Valentine - born Wolverhampton, Thomas born Leicester, Bertie born Wolverhampton and finally Annette born Manchester.

In 1892 Annette died.

1901 Census finds Thomas George Wentworth Smith still living in Bedford Street, Moss Side, Manchester, with his second wife Emma (nee Ferguson), two children from his first marriage Birtie and Annette and three children from his second marriage Maud, George and Albert.

This second marriage produced four further children:

Edith Ethel Smith born 1901

Florence Smith born 1906 (my mother)

Valmir Smith born 1908

Eric Smith (not yet traced)

From Lorraine C. Mooney (nee Kelly)

Very Happy Hi Chris and Robert,

Welcome Chris, to Smith Chat, thanks very much for sharing your Smith interests, and yes I'm sure this will be of interest to other Smith researchers in the future if not immediately. Am I correct in thinking that you haven't yet got Thomas and Annette's marriage record?

If you haven't got it yet - it looks as though this is the correct one.........
June Quarter 1879 - Leicester Registration District
GRO ref Vol/page 7a/349
Smith Thomas George W
matching reference for......
Shelton Annette

The marriage certificate, as you'll know, should give Thomas's father's name and occupation, which should then help identify Thomas's correct birth registration.

I'm interested in the Manchester connections to your Smith family for inclusion, at a later date, in the Smith List of Lancs, WRY & Isle of Man.

Chris, it might be beneficial if we move or copy this topic to our "Other UK Counties" Board, where others researching Smiths of Gloucester, Leicester and/or Kent are more
likely to pick up on it, also with a copy to the East & South-East Lancashire Board - in view of Manchester.

I'll do that later Chris, if you like, but do you want a copy also retaining here on this Board? (I'm thinking you might have posted it here on the Aus/New Zealand Board because either you live "down under" yourself, or one of your Smith relatives emigrated?)

In any case - we'll chat again soon. wave

Carole,

You can place the above enquiries where ever you think fit, but please leave on this board as I have family in Australia.
