 | Subject: Matthew SMITH Fri 1 Jun 2007 - 0:48 | |
| Hi I just thought I would register my SMITH interest. I have very little information on him. ::
Matthew SMITH so far no birth no death no marriage records
married to an Elizabeth FINLAYSON
they had at least one child, a daughter (my Gr Gr Grandmother) Elizabeth Wyse SMITH 10/April/1835 in Cambelltown, NSW. I have found several registered births to Matthew and Elizabeth but until I order transcripts I don't know if they are they same people.
I have only just started on them but I am finding it very difficult to find info on them.
It is possible that Matthew was a convict as there are 5 or 6 Matthew SMITH convicts also there were only 2 free Matthew SMITH's that came as free settlers, a child and a man that to me don't fit but it does help to narrow the people down. Also there are no births for a Matthew SMITH that fit. I cannot find their marriage either.
If anyone can help please let me know. As I said I really haven't done much on them yet as I have been working on my other families but the lure of serching a SMITH keeps nagging at me, I love a challenge

| Hi Michelle
Have you looked on any of the websites that I have posted on the Australia Genealogy Board, one of them might help you.
It is very hard to find people that are born before 1837 because there were no records after that, I am finding it hard too with Josiah Smith my great great grandfather as on his marriage certificate he gives no father to chase.
Anyway have a look at some of those web pages and I will have a look to see if I can find some more. I think you might be lucky as all the people sent here from England were recorded, even back to the first Fleet.
Good Luck

| Hi Michelle Glad you joined us. You may already know but Familysearch.org lists an Elizabeth Douglass or Finlayson as marrying a Mathew Smith (note only one T) on 12 Mar 1836 at Church of England, N.S.W. If this is the right one at least it gives a starting point. Regards John |

| Michelle I know what you mean about the I.G.I. having bad info, but I think this record is fairly reliable. The secret is in the messages area of the record. This one is an extract from Church records, the bad info is USUALLY SUBMITTED by an LDS church Member. Best of Luck John |

mattycat | Michelle,
This is possibly not much use but I searched on familysearch.org for Elizabeth's birth. There are about 4 .. all submitted by LDS member
Elizabeth Douglass born 31.7.1812 at Windsor New South Wales Australia parents Bejamin and Mary Douglass
1814 birth of Elizabeth Douglass at Windsor New South Wales parents William & Mary Douglass

| Hi Guys, I thought I had better give you an update. I have been contacted by a distant "1/2 Cousin" to my Mattew SMITH and she had some really interesting info for me. We are helping each other so it will be a little easier now. I will get all of my info together and do one posting , maybe the info withh be helpful to someone else or maybe it could link me to someone elses SMITH. Anyway we are waiting anxiously for some Certs and Convict Info but when I have it all I will let you know!! By the way if I find any interesting info about SMITHs is it ok to post it in the forum? I would hate for someone to miss out on great info just because they didn't know where to find it.... All the best with your research, Michelle _________________ Convicts R Us - proudly collecting convicts since 1998. We have collected 5 to date. I think its all very exciting finding convicts in your tree, at least it isnt boring lol I cant wait to hear what you have found out so far.
PS On the Australia Board you can always put the other ancestors not named Smiths that are convicts, Im sure our members would find that really interesting, I know I would. |
| mattycat wrote: | Michelle .. keep them coming!! it is all very interesting and anyway most just got convicted and deported for very minor offences. My Smiths were boring, matty
Ps I am just writing up a Coroners report of a suicide Fatal Drowning down a draw well in 1867.. on my husbands side .. very interesting .. then he has another rellie .. suicide!! but I can't find a coroners report for that | I have spent all of my buget this week on certs. Anyway, I will let you all know the out come of my SMITH saga.... . I actually have the flu at the moment and I am trying to kick it before next week cos I have an Operation coming up and I don't want them to put it off at the pre-op... Regards, Michelle
