Sophia Smith (b. 1796, d. 1870) was born in Hatfield Massachusetts.* She inherited a sizable fortune, became deaf in mid-life and initially considered leaving her fortune to an institute for the deaf. At about the same time the Clarke School for the Deaf opened in Northampton, Massachusetts. She decided to endow Smith College, which opened in 1875.
*It is probable that Sophia descended from one of the two Smith lines I identified earlier and that she and I are related – very distantly related.

Smith College is a private, independent women's liberal arts college located in Northampton, Massachusetts. Smith is a member of the Five Colleges consortium, which comprises Mount Holyoke College, Amherst College, Hampshire College, and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Students from each institution may take courses at the other institutions if space is available. Information on Smith College can be found at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smith_College. Many notable women attended Smith including First Ladies Barbara Bush and Nancy Reagan.

I attended the University of Massachusetts (1970-1975) under the GI Bill (i.e., military veterans qualified for a stipend). U of M, a state sponsored school, is by far the largest of the five with a student body of about 25,000. Amherst College is an Ivy League College as are Smith and Mount Holyoke Colleges (all much too liberal for most veterans). Hampshire College is, or was in the 70’s, a self-paced school where one could design their own curriculum.

Morning' Don,

Thanks for that interesting info about Sophia Smith. Will come back & have another study of all this later. And you could be distantly related to her too, I see.

Talk later
