| As promised in Saterday's post, a noted contemporary of Kate Smith’s was Vera Margaret Welch.
Vera was appointed an OBE in 1969 and a DBE in 1975. She was a popular recording artist on both sides of the Atlantic.
What was Vera’s stage name?

| Congratulations Gillian and Carole :
Vera Lynn was a popular singer whose career flourished during World War II, when she was nicknamed "The Forces' Sweetheart". She had many notable hits both during and after the war. Many of her songs can be found and downloaded at the following site. http://www.pcdon.com/VeraLynn.html
The Wikipedia website provides a good summery of her career. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vera_Lynn
Carole, you tapped into a planned Beagle Log topic when you brought up “(Therell be Bluebirds Over) The White Cliffs of Dover”. As a piece of trivia, bluebirds are found only in the Americas. The song was recorded by many artists with the most well known recording by Vera Lynn which can be heard at http://www.pcdon.com/-VeraLynn-WhiteCliffsOfDover.wav _________________ Don |
