Last year I was downtown and snapped a few pictures. Below is a famous landmark.

What monument is this?

A few weeks ago, there was a show on cable TV about moving the Vatican Obelisk . Very interesting.

What other obelisks can you name?

Hola Don!
I am sorry to say that I have no idea about the name of this monument. However, in answer to your request for other obelisks I immediately thought of Cleopatra's Needle on the banks of the Thames. Then I thought I had better check the meaning of 'obelisk' in the dictionary. There I am told it is a '4 sided stone column tapering to a pyramid at the top'. From memory I believe Cleopatra's Needle fits the bill but I am not certain. Can anyone confirm this please?
Hasta luego, Gillian

The picture is of the Washington Monument. It is a prominent fixture on the DC skyline. It is located on the Mall, halfway between the Capital Building and the Lincoln Memorial. There normally is a wait to go to the top. My wife and I have been to the top once. It was in February, gale force winds, and most important – no lines.

Gillian, Cleopatra's Needle is indeed an obelisk. There are apparently only 30 Egyptian obelisks remaining in the world. See Obelisk of the World This site identifies the Washington Monument as "obelisk-shaped" rather then an "authentic" obelisk. Interesting :shrug]:
