On 30 September 1938, Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain in his speech concerning the Munich Agreement is often misquoted as "peace in our time".

What is the correct quote?

Hola Don!

I think it was 'peace with honour' 'peace for our time'.

Adios Gillian

Hi Don and Hola Gillian Very Happy

Yes, I believe you're right Gillian. Look - found this........

On September 30, 1938 The following statement was made by British Prime Minister, Neville Chamberlain, in front of 10 Downing Street, London, after his arrival home from the notorious Munich Conference of 1938

the speech ends with..............
Quote:
My good friends, for the second time in our history,
a British Prime Minister has returned from Germany bringing
peace with honor. I believe it is "peace for our time."
Go home and get a nice quiet sleep

Congratulations. :<salute>
Many folks today (at least on this side of the Atlantic Embarassed ) don't even know who Neville Chamberlain was.

The day following Chamberlain’s speech, German troops moved into the Sudetenland. The remaining parts of Czechoslovakia were subsequently invaded and annexed by Germany in March 1939, prior to the start of the war on 1 September 1939.

Hi Don,

Well it just so happens that it was only a couple of weeks or so ago that my parents (who were children during WW2) were talking about Neville Chamberlain and about how they remembered it being on the news on the radio (or the "wireless" as they called it in those days) - & him telling everyone that everything was going to be Ok after he'd been over to Germany to talk to Hitler! (well, that's how my mum and dad remember it from their childhood).

Anyway, thank heavens for Mr Churchill.

Carole.

Hi all,

I've just been reading through some of the Beagle Logs. What a lot of subjects we've covered already!!

But thought I'd just mention that I've just deleted a big chunk from my last post above - as when reading through it - decided that some people might consider it to have been too political. It is history of course but - history that's not really all that long ago.

Carole,

Given the event was over 60 years ago I think it is fair game to recount family memories, with some judicious editing. After all, it is now history.

But then again, historical events can be controversial. Wink

One of the major news stories here is the intent of the House of Representatives to pass a non-binding resolution condemning the Armenian Genocide that occurred in 1915 under the Ottomans. There is consensus that mass killings occurred. Turkey is strongly opposed to labeling it genocide and has threaten strong action if the American Congress passes such a resolution. The rational for passing it is partisan politics so I will bypass recounting that here. Several years ago, France formally declared the event genocide and Turkey severed military relations with them. It will be interesting to see how this unfolds.

In the not to distant future The Beagle Log will feature an item about a very political event that involves regicide and the involvement of my ancestors.
