The topic for today is Genealogy, more specifically the LDS's digitizing efforts.

I'm sure you are all familiar with the LDS Family Search web site. Recently the OLLI Genealogy Club had a guest speaker from a local LDS family History Center. Her talk focused on the LDS's current efforts to digitized data. Are you aware of this effort?

She provided two web sites that may be of interest to you. The first was the "Indexing" site, which is the front-end of the digitizing effort. This site is looking for volunteers to transcribe hand written records. This site is found at http://www.familysearchindexing.org/fsi-admin/navctrl.jsf?pname=homeTab

The second site she referenced was the family Search Labs site. You can find this at http://labs.familysearch.org/. There are some neat tools here with which to view GEDCOM files as well as some pilot data files.[/color]

Look at the referenced sites and let me know what you think. These look like some potentially great tools for genealogists.

Well it all looks highly technical and until I started using it I wouldn't be able to make any assessment at all.

I've just been exploring it - No didn't know anything about this before Don. So thanks for telling us. Well the good news for us all, is that - it will eventually provide more free databases at the LDS's Familysearch site. At the moment - the already completed, currently ongoing and future planned databases, are mainly good news mostly for those researching their roots back from America and Canada.

But I also notice that listed with the currently ongoing transcriptions
(amongst the otherwise Canada and USA databases) are.........

Irish Birth Indexes 1864-1883
Irish Death Indexes 1864-1884

So that is excellent news for anyone attempting to trace their Irish ancestors' roots, and haven't otherwise got access to the GRO indexes for Ireland. (which is most researchers unless they actually live in Ireland)

I will add a link on our Ireland board about this news , as I have a list of other "Links for Ireland Research" drafted ready to input there.
