| Hi Don,
Was just thinking............ Based on the same theory -
| Quote: | | less likely to pair up in an age of global intermingling. |
It could also be argued that blonde hair and blue eyes will eventually become extinct, these being the recessive genes for eyes and hair colour. For anyone to have blonde hair and/or blue eyes they must have the gene from both parents.
This has got me wondering now If a person inherits one blonde-haired gene and one red-haired gene - what colour of hair will result?? Hmmmm, I mustn't let myself become side-tracked! but that would be interesting to investigate.
See you later _________________ Carole, Smith Project/Smith Chat Admin Nothing is too small to know, and nothing too big to attempt (William Van Horne) |

| PS: My guess at answering the question
percentage of redheads in Scotland - I think will be about the same as all British Isles - and my guess for all of that is 4% of population.
from your notes........
| Quote: | | It is estimated that only 2% of the world’s population are natural redheads |
Bearing in mind the dark haired/brown eyed genetics of vast populations around the world, I would have thought that 2% redheads worldwide is quite high!!

| Hi Don and Carole I read with interest your posts about redheads. My late father-in-law(born in Wales) had red hair and my mother -in -law (born in Scotland) had brown hair. They had 4 children, 8 grandchildren and 9 g/greatchildren and not a redhead amongst them, but when my husband grew a beard it was red. JFS |

| Amazingly, Scotland’s redheaded population comprises 13% of the total population - 2 in 5 have the redhead gene. These statistics come from the September issue of the National Geographic. How do they match with your observations?
Carole, I have no idea on how blond blue eye genes will fare, or which are the dominate genes; would be interesting to find out.
As for your other question “If a person inherits one blonde-haired gene and one red-haired gene - what color of hair will result?” The answer is obvious, strawberry blond. _________________ Don |

| Hi all,
JFS - that's interesting about your husband's ancestry - Scottish & Welsh - and especially his red beard!! being the only red hair inherited.
Don, heck that's surprised me - but then again, I've only been to Scotland a couple of times in my life. I based my approximate guess on percentage of red-headed children you might find in a high school in Lancashire!! But then agian - I could have got that way out!!
I have done some study of genetics and I posted a Topic about it a few months ago here............... >>GENETICS: My Smith blue-eyed Gene >>which shows the dominance of dark hair, brown eyes, etc. (I have green eyes from one green gene + my Smith blue gene)
But had never considered red hair, but now have some information about it - which I'll post at some later time on my old Topic (link above).
I now know that red hair is an "incomplete dominant" and apparently will blend with the colour of the paired gene. So you were in fact quite correct Don, when you said blonde + red gene = strawberry blonde. I'll write more about it at a later date.
In the meantime - see my old topic

| Hi Maxine,
Aaah you're mum's a redhead - so she must have had a red gene passed down from both her parents - unless she got one red and one blonde, if she's more of a strawberry blonde.
JFS - Does your husband like a drop of whiskey, to go with his Scottish red beard?? I just couldn't resist this!!
But I'm not too sure now actually - whether he's drinking from a whiskey bottle - or playing some kind of musical instrument?? Wanted one with a kilt too really - but couldn't find one!!
It's from Animations Factory - so I'm sorry it's got their copyright thing on it. _________________________________

| You don't need a red beard to enjoy good whiskey, and too much enjoyment will limit your playing the kazoo.
It's nice to see these chats develop _________________ Don |

| Hi Yes my ex-husband does like a drop of the hard stuff. But his Red Beard is not from his Scottish mother, but his Welsh father! My mother-in -law was from Stornaway and she loved Haggis JFS |

| Haaa haaa - that was meant with no disrespect to my Scottish and Welsh neighbours. Love you all. But I couldn't resist it JFS!! I was actually at my dad's house on his computer earlier, experimenting with his imaging programme! - that was when I gave a Welsh hat to "Scottish Man Blowing a Kazoo"!! I'm home now Carole xx |
