The Beagle Log, 16 October 2007 - "B" Rated Wester

Good Morning All,

Daz's question about Sourdough prompts today's Beagle Log posting. His question was “what is a sourdough?” The answer, a gold prospector. The first time I heard this term was as a kid watching “B” rated westerns. Gabby Hays was the consummate sidekick. In more than one movie he played the ‘old sourdough’.

This got me to thinking about stars of old “B” rated westerns. Ones that come to mind are: The Cisco Kid, Hopalong Cassidy, and Tom Mix for you older chatters, and for the younger folks Roy Rodgers.

What other stars of the silver screen who played in these westerns can you remember?

Westerns weren't really my scene but I loved 'Lassie'! I was more into 'Robin Hood' with Richard Green which I watched with great devotion on a Sunday afternoon at my Grandparents' home!

I remember going to pictures on a saturday morning and watching the old westerns, don't remember anyones name though. But I loved the westerns on TV, Sugarfoot, Rawhide,The Virginian and others I forgotten the names of.

Did Gabby Hays have a limp?

Gabby may of had a limp in some of the roles he played but I don't recall one. You may be thinking of Chester in Gunsmoke.
