Hola Don!
Yes I have visited Pompeii. Strangely enough we flew the day after 9/11. It was a weird experience to be travelling that day because the world was in shock and everyone was nervous. When we arrived in Italy all the flags were at half mast because they lost many people in the twin towers.
During the week we met an American working in Sorrento and shared an evening meal with him. He was enduring his own personal crisis although his family in America was safe. We tried to comfort him a little.
I had wanted to visit Pompeii since I was a child because my father told me all about it. He was in Italy at the end of WW2. When I returned from Italy having visited Sorrento and Positano I was going through some very old photos. I found a photo of my father taken during the war on Positano beach!! It was one of those eerie moments with goose bumps.
Well, Pompeii! What a place! It was wonderful, mind blowing, what the Romans could do. Incredibly interesting with its fast food restaurants and provision for all kinds of sexual deviancy! However, it was a dreadful way to die, poor people.
