We have all had bad days but not much worse then this person's.

This body cast was found in the excavations at Pompeii.

Pompeii was a Roman city near Naples. Pompeii was destroyed and completely buried; during a catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius on 24 August 79 (I think we missed this in "This Day in History").

My wife and I visited Pompeii in 1973. We found it fascinating. The Romans were more advanced then I had previously credited them. I was impressed with the indoor plumbing, which used lead pipes.

Has anyone else visited Pompeii?

If so what was your impression?

Hi Don,

My sister & I went on holiday to Sorrento, some years ago, actually like you - in the 1970s, & we had intended visiting Pompei - but unfortunately didn't manage to fit it in during the week we were in Sorrento (as then went off to the beautiful Isle of Capri for the second week).

The best we could manage was that we bought some jewellery - that was set with "stones" made from the Vesuvius Lava. I would love to go back & visit the Naples region of Italy sometime. It was wonderful. I love Italy.

This image you've posted of the body cast is amazing! Yes - they certainly did have a bad day.

And the Romans in history - yes this subject is fascinating too - A very clever lot weren't they?

See you later

Hola Don!

Yes I have visited Pompeii. Strangely enough we flew the day after 9/11. It was a weird experience to be travelling that day because the world was in shock and everyone was nervous. When we arrived in Italy all the flags were at half mast because they lost many people in the twin towers.

During the week we met an American working in Sorrento and shared an evening meal with him. He was enduring his own personal crisis although his family in America was safe. We tried to comfort him a little.

I had wanted to visit Pompeii since I was a child because my father told me all about it. He was in Italy at the end of WW2. When I returned from Italy having visited Sorrento and Positano I was going through some very old photos. I found a photo of my father taken during the war on Positano beach!! It was one of those eerie moments with goose bumps.

Well, Pompeii! What a place! It was wonderful, mind blowing, what the Romans could do. Incredibly interesting with its fast food restaurants and provision for all kinds of sexual deviancy! However, it was a dreadful way to die, poor people.

Adios Gillian

Hi everyone,

Just been reading through yesterday's Beagle Log about Pompei.

Ooh hola Gillian - I felt the "goose bumps" too as I read the end your lovely story - when you sought out the photo of your Dad. Thanks for sharing that story.
