| This will be a bit harder than past challenges. The questions are:
1) Where was this taken?
2) What are the items shown?

Here are some clues.
The location is an island that the US acquired in 1898 after the Spanish-American War. This war resulted from American demands that Spain peacefully resolve the Cuban fight for independence, though strong expansionist sentiment in the United States may have also motivated the government to target Spain's other remaining overseas territories. The sinking of the USS Maine in Havana harbor precipitated the war and popularized the phrase "Remember the Maine!" In subsequent years, the sinking of this battleship has been a topic of great speculation: did the Spanish sink it with a mine or was there an internal magazine explosion. The war ended after quick, decisive US naval and military victories in the Philippines and Cuba.
Very few people holding a British passport have visited this island.
The items in the picture are made of two pieces of coral stone, each about five feet tall. Each structure is the home of ancestral spirits. These stone structures have come to symbolize the island. _________________ Don |

| I see there were several hits but no takers on today's challenge.
The picture was taken on the island of Guam. Guam is located at 13.5°N 144.5°E and has an area of 210 square miles. It is the southernmost island in the Mariana island chain and is the largest island in Micronesia. It's location is just west of the international date line and is billed as "Where America's Day Begins".
This site, Guam Photos, has a few scenic pictures . The 11th photo was taken from the patio of the Officer's Club, "The Top of the Mar". My wife and I would go there for dinner once or twice a month.
The items shown are Latte Stones.
In the early 80's, I accepted a position with the US Navy as the Management Officer at the Public Works Center (PWC), Guam. My family and I moved to the island in January 1982 and resided on the Naval Base until the summer of ‘84. We found Guam to be a very family friendly place. Our children were just entering school so they avoided cultural problems older kids faced. While on Guam, we were afforded the opportunity to travel, space available, throughout the Pacific on military aircraft. We took full advantage of this with several trips to the Philippines, Japan, and Korea. _________________ Don |

| Hi Don,
Oh - sorry there were no takers yesterday! Well - that's all interesting information too. Thanks for sharing that Don & the website links.
By the way - on your 9/11 Beagle Log - you included a link to the US Navy History Site. I couldn't pull myself away from that site. It's brilliant!! Especially the WW2 stuff, & the drawings by the 3 artists who were present on D-Day. I'm thinking must add a link somewhere in Smith Chat to that site for the interest of others. Its fascinating.
Going to today's Beagle Log now

| Hi Carole
I like taking part in Quizzes. I have always been interested in improving my knowledge. My motto is "You never too old to learn". :: So if I don't know the answer to the question I look it up on Google and learn something new.
Bye for now JFS |

Belated congratulations. Not many folks know about Guam. It's a 7-hour flight from Hawaii to Guam and 3-hours from Tokyo. Guam is a favorite Japanese tourist destination. The best time of the year for a visit is November - May, the dry season (well moderately dry). The remainder of the year is hot and sticky. In many ways, Guam is like Hawaii, but 20 years behind Hawaii. _________________ Don |
