PostSubject: The Beable Log, 26 May 2008 - Memorial Day   Mon 26 May 2008 - 14:20

Good Morning All,

It’s a bright sunny day here in the Mid-Atlantic States. It is Memorial Day Weekend.

Memorial Day (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Memorial_Day) is a Federal holiday established to honor Union soldiers of the American Civil war and later expanded to include casualties of any war or military action. Memorial Day is observed on the last Monday of May. Traditionally the holiday is on 30 May.

Today the President will be laying a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tomb_of_the_Unknown_Soldier). There will be parades and barbeques across the country.

Yesterday Rolling Thunder came to town. Rolling Thunder is an annual motorcycle rally held in Washington, DC during the Memorial Day (see http://www.rollingthunder1.com/). Thousands of cyclist converge on the Capital annually for this event.

In addition to remembrance, Memorial Day is also used as a time for picnics, barbecues, family gatherings, and sporting events. One of the longest standing traditions is the running of the Indianapolis 500 (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indianapolis_500 ), which has been held in conjunction with Memorial Day since 1911.

Hi Don!

That is interesting. We are enjoying 'Spring Bank Holiday', Monday 26th was a Bank Holiday and many school children are revelling in their half term holiday. The roads are relatively quiet because many families are on holiday ie away from home. Unfortunately the weather is very disappointing- quite wet and chilly. That's life as they say!

Cheers Gillian

Hi Don, Gillian.
I had booked the week off on holiday but as I still needed to rest we didn't go away.
On Wednesday we went to the science and industry museum in Manchester to see the exhibition by the German biologist (sorry can't spell his name). It is called Body worlds. There are over 200 body parts from real bodies. He has developed a way of plasticising organs and bodies to forever preserve them. It was absolutely fantastic. Due to the plasticising you don't see them as actual bodies, they look so much like the plastic bodies that students learn on. We took our 2 boys and thought we wouldn't mention they were real bodies unless they asked, which was 10 seconds after seeing the 1st body. We told them the truth as it was written on the story boards wherever you went. They were enthralled and not scared a bit which was good. I wasn't looking forward to the packed lunch we took but all stayed down.
Love to all
Daz

Always there at the end of the day.
The light of their love forever constant as the Northern star.
Safely guiding me home.

Hi Everyone!

Yes, some of our family, including grandchildren of various ages, have visited the exhibition and say how wonderful it is. I haven't been yet but must bear it in mind for a wet day!

Hope you enjoyed the rest Daz

Cheers Gillian
