PostSubject: Mary Smith, Abbey Mill (Abbey Village)   Wed 16 May 2007 - 21:01

I must admit my heart sank when I discovered that my great great grandmother's name was Mary Smith !! All I know about her is that she was born circa 1829 in or around the Withnell area of Lancashire. She married Thomas Woodburn at St Paul's Withnell in 1849. According to the certificate her father was Joseph Smith, a quarryman.
In 1841 the family are living in the Abbey Mill (Abbey Village) area. From that record I discovered that Mary had an older brother Joseph (b circa 1819) & 3 sisters, Ellen, Esther & Nancy (born between 1822 & 1826). Obviously there could be more siblings. Her mother must have died before that date, so I don't know her name.

Other families I am researching in Lancashire:
Woodburn - Cartmel, Preston, Withnell, Darwen.
Savage - Darwen & Slaidburn
Herd - Waddington & Darwen
Kay, Fish & Kirkham - Darwen
Talbot - Blackburn & Darwen
Askew - Kirby Lonsdale & Darwen
Wilson - Darwen after 1855

Those are just some of mine - then there are my husband's :

Wilding/Welding - Skelmersdale & Wigan
Hunter - Skelmersdale
Sell, Ince, Anderton, Fishwick, Sharrock - Wigan
Fielding - Bolton & Wigan
Butterworth, Cheshire & Wigan
Warburton - Cheshire

Those are just the Lancashire ones !!

I am hoping to find more about my Mary Smith's family.

Welcome Justanne
I know the feeling when you find out you have Smiths in your tree, mine were Travellers too so that makes it even harder when they dont show up easy in the census.

Good Luck with your search and please join in with Coffee Chit Chat and any other topics that interest you.

Justanne,

I'm just wondering whether you've already checked any Withnell & surrounding areas Baptisms' registers for Mary & her siblings, & if so - which churches have you covered? Am I right in thinking the baptisms haven't been found at St Pauls Withnell? Then we can figure out which other Baptisms registers they might be found.
